Superior Ride 2010

One of my bucket list goals is to ride all 5 Great Lakes. I've obviously got Michigan under my belt, and I want Superior next. There's something about it that just attracts me to it. It's big, cold, and I want some.

I want to plan a ride with several members from this forum and some people over on the X. Does anyone have any interest in this? Any good spot to stay and ride? Anyone have any good or bad experience about the big lake they'd like to share?

Re: Superior Ride 2010

The big water is addicting.

There are some good spots depending on the time of year.

I rode in Duluth last weekend and it was a blast on Saturday and almost unrideable (big) on Sunday.

Lots of good places to stay and lots of nightlife right in Canal Park.

Marquette, MI is very scenic and it looks like it would be a fun place to ride, but I've never ridden there myself.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is a pretty good spot (according to surfers). I think it sticks up far enough where it gets decent waves in summer (west wind).

I have kayaked (not skiied) the Keweenaw, Marquette, and further east near Grand Island and can vouch for the existence of some decent waves even in Summer.

Re: Superior Ride 2010

I've been to Houghton up on the Keweenaw, it's awesome up there, but I'm not sure where we could launch from there.

And I didn't mean to sound like a werido but honestly the intensity of superior attracts me to it.

Re: Superior Ride 2010

I’ve been riding Lake Superior for the last 6 years.

If you are just interested in riding for the day I would suggest you start in Duluth/Superior. Several good places launches in the area with lots of place to stay and fun things to do at night. You can either hang out around the harbor / breakwater area or do a short day trip. One I have done several times is start in Duluth, ride up the Wisconsin side to Port Wing, the cut across the lake to Knife River and back to Duluth.

If you are interested in an overnight trip I have done several from Duluth to Grand Marias, Grand Portage and even as far north as Thunder Bay.

Next year I am going to circumnavigate the lake. It will take between 8 and 10 days. If you are interested or have other questions you can contact me at jay2a8@yahoo.com
