Interested in a "Socal Offshore Triangle" Race?

What would you guys say to a "SoCal Offshore triangle" race?

The Course:

We're going to hit all 3 riding/training HOT SPOTS in this race!

The course is approx 100-106 miles starting from Long Beach, racing to Avalon for a mandatory "up to" 20 - 30 minute fuel stop/rest & then race to Dana Point for another fuel stop, Then race back to Long Beach for the finish.

The course can be reversed starting from DP to AV to LB and back to DP OR DP to LB to AV and back...etc..
Since Avalon only has 89 octane it would be best to have AV as the 1st destination no matter how the course is ran, this way if you run race fuel you will only need about 5 gallons of 89 mixed in your remaining 1/2 tank to get to the next destination or bring some octane boost. Those of us with ext. fuel cells it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, LB might be the better place to start because of the lodging & attractions for the out of town guests.

Each leg will be recorded by time. Add all 3 times to get a combined total & best time wins. You might have a bad 1st leg but excellent 2nd & 3rd leg so your times will judge how well you ran. Just because the 1st ski crosses the finish line doesn't mean he's the winner.

Race date?
To be determined.. The date can't interfere with other events & should be 3- 4 weeks between other races.
Any Ideas on a good set date?

Each leg will be a restart like the 1st leg. Everyone Restarts at the same time from each leg.

The logistics are being worked out now to see where the entry fee's will land & if it's doo-able. If all goes well there will be a safety helicopter with video & photo shooting as well as a rescue swimmer in case he's needed. Several safety ski's floating around the course & an offshore boat. We're looking at vessel assist to help out since we have a connection with them.

Any advice/tips on where to get Loaner/rent (5 or 6) 4 stroke ski's for the safety crew to use?

We will need 35+ racers to make this happen to keep the entry fee's around $200.00.. Could be a little more, could be less than that but it will be worth it!

If all goes well to plan this will be a big race!

Let me know via email stxrider@charter.net, PM or here if you're interested in making this happen. If you know of anyone that's a FOR SURE entry let me know that too.

All ideas & advice are welcomed!

Thank you!

Re: Interested in a "Socal Offshore Triangle" Race?

There are a few questions being asked.

1) Is this going to be a sanctioned race?
As of now, it's open... What would you want?

2) Who's promoting it?
If it were to be a sanctioned APBA race, then we would ask Ross and RPM to direct this race.
If Ross is unable to do so and we elect to go "Outlaw", Jim Lambert said he would come down & make it happen
"the outlaw way".
Ross - would this be a race you might be interested in putting on?

3) When?
We haven't approached Ross yet, and don't know what his current schedule allows.
Jim said it would be difficult trying to fit it into this years djsa schedule, but November is realistic - otherwise it's up in the air.
This is all just the beginning of trying to make it happen & Jim shared a few ideas.

a few quotes from Jim:

On course safety -
"If K-38 is available and offers to assist, I would say that would be a better option. Working in familiar waters is by far better than working in foreign waters. I do a good job as a marine patrol officer up north because these waters are my backyard and I know just about every inch of the delta. If I were to work on a Dana Point patrol job I could do the basics of the job but I would be handicapped by not knowing the area. I just wouldn't want to see resources spread too thin at a race I was putting on.

The best approach would be to double up both K-38 and Team Orange so that there would be a minimum of 6 safety skis working the race. One K-38 member doubled with a Team Orange rider. It all depends on how Shawn feels about it.
If you would like K38 to handle the setup or course safety - I'd say you'd never be in safer hands - just as long as there is an adequate number of people on the team".

On race sanctioning -
"I think someone asked if this is going to be a sanctioned race or "just for fun".
If the guys want to see this as a sanctioned APBA race for points - then I'd say Ross needs to be contacted to see if
1) he's interested,
2) if he can fit it into his schedule, and
3) how much he'd realistically charge for an all day race.

If you guys decide to make it an OUTLAW race I don't think he'll have a problem with djsa coming down there to help run it.
Lets put it this way... if Ross wanted to put on a race in Norcal - it wouldn't bother me in the slightest because we do 2 different things. He is an APBA promoter, I am an OUTLAW promoter. My feeling is - theres plenty of river and ocean out there for everyone"
I'm sure his is the same. "I think its going to come down to this:

option-1
If you guys decide to make it an APBA race for points - you will be starting an epic race that would rank right up there with the Mark Hahn and LBTC and it will be another yearly event that everyone is attracted to and looks forward to. It should be run by the APBA promoter who is familiar with the area, and who has the resources available to pull it off. Beyond all else, it will have to be put on with 100 percent professionalism.

option-2
If the promoter isn't intrigued with the idea and doesn't want to put it on, then the choices are running OUTLAW, or for fun.
If you guys want this to be a full out race, with scoring, points, awards, etc... I have absolutely no hesitation in bringing a little OUTLAW flavor down to your neck of the woods to pull it off ". "This would be a fun "fun ride" but oh my God - its got the potential to be an incredible race not a lot of others will be able to match.

If Ross and Shawn want to roll with it - I say give it a GREEN LIGHT and make it happen.
If they don't and you guys want to go OUTLAW - I'll do everything I can to help make it happen."

- End quotes -

Ross, would/could this be within your plans in the near future?"
