SBT 580 crank repair

Alright..I have a motor that toasted itself due to something coming apart. Rotary shaft was bent..the brass gear stripped and the bronze gear on the crank lost a tooth.. Now the motor is a sbt rebuild. I did not buy it from sbt. It came in a 1996 587 spi that ran for about 2 minutes after it was purchased from the previous owner. I'm sure they new something was wrong with it hence the sale. Anyhow..I'm rebuilding it myself and I need to know what the cost is on replacing the bronze gear on the crankshaft will be? A local shop has checked the crank and it seems to be in exceptional shape except for that... So here's a pic and let me know...thx

Re: SBT 580 crank repair

Matt,

SBT does not "repair" your crank, you gotta buy a new one and send in that one for exchange..

Re: SBT 580 crank repair

Just get all the brass off of the steel gear,I do mean every spec of it and put it back together with a new shaft and brass gear,if the rest of the crank is ok and it passes a pressure test on the rotary valve housing after installation it should work fine after that.

I've considered that...but then this is my first seadoo motor..so in looking at that pic and the chunk missing on the gear...would you try and run it? I really don't know how much of those gears touch at the same time...would you touch up the broke edges so there not sharp or just leave it alone? I'm pulling the rotary shaft out of another motor and going to place it on there and see...I'm waiting on a manual for the thing..any tips on cleaning this crank to make sure i get all the debri out of the bearings?
