low compression SBT reman engine premium

Anybody have a guess as to why a new SBT premium engine with less than 20 hours on it would all of a sudden have less than 40psi compression in BOTH cylinders and will not start. Oil pump is working, oil was also put in the gas for the first tank. Not driven hard and engine RPMs were varied, quit running while idling, started again so I could get to shore, would not start again. Could it be something else beside the inside of the engine?

Re: low compression SBT reman engine premium

Most of the time when you lose compression in a new engine it is from running it lean and burning up the cylinders. Did you do any type of carb re-building or adjusting when installing your new engine? And what happen to the old engine that you had to replace it?

Re: low compression SBT reman engine premium

THANKS FOR THE REPLIES.
I took it back to the dealer that replaced the engine and they determined the compression was low 35-40psi, I did a check but I did not give it full throttle. They feel the problem is inside the engine. The dealer that did the install rebuilt the carbs with a Mikuni carb kit. As far as the original engine it got water inside the engine and the bearings rusted causing the the engine to seize up. I have not touched anything with the engine other than pulling the plugs to check for spark and a compression check. Picked the machine up and will evaluate my next step before I go any further.

When did you buy the engine and put it in?

Re: low compression SBT reman engine premium/conclusion

Issue resolved, took it to a dealer, they confirmed low compression. Within 2 days they had it out and shipped it back to SBT. In less than 2 weeks I had the waverunner back with a new reman engine. It was determined sand got in the cooling system and caused it to overheat, damaging the rings. Very possible in the conditions I use my waverunner, I have no reason to doubt their conclusion. SBT stood by their warranty and provided me with another engine. My only charges were shipping and dealer labor. I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE DEALER (ROSEVILLE POWER SPORTS in Roseville Mi.) service, SBT for standing behind their no fault warranty and the promptness they both took care of this.

Re: low compression SBT reman engine premium

if sand got in the engine and it over heated why would you drive it with the buzzer buzzing ? if it did not buzz why did the dealer not fix that when they installed the new engine ?
