newbie looking for advice

Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy 2 stand up jet skis, and i'm looking for advice on brand, hours, year, ect. I'm new to owning but have ridden other family members stand up's in the past. Any information on what to look for or whatever would be much appreciated. Where is the best place to buy used in Tx? Been having some difficulty finding ski's.
Thank you.

Re: newbie looking for advice

Your choice of skis is going to be determined by budget.

If you want two, and have $1000 or less, then it's going to be a pair of Kawi JS550 skis.

If you have $30,000 or more, it's going to be a pair of Hydrospace skis.

In between there are the superjets and the Kawi SXRs.

It also depends on what you want to do with them. If you want to do freestyle, the js550 skis are not a good choice.

If you just want to cruise around, the JS550s will do fine.

If you want to tear up the bouys, you have a wide choice.

With that price range, you're not likely to get 2 skis that are already modded for freestyle, but you could get one modded ski or 2 stock skis and build them up to what you like. And where to get them depends on where you are. Try Craig's list, e-bay, local paper, on this site or on the X.

As far as the best ski for freestyle people can and will argue that all day long, but the majority seem to like the roundnose superjet best for it's combination of weight, handling, versatility, and aftermarket parts availability. This is superjets from 1996 to present, although the '08 marked the start of a new hull that is somewhat controversial as whether it is better for freestyle or not. I haven't ridden one myself, so I can't offer an opinion of my own, but people who's opinion I trust like the newest hull a lot for freestyle.

A freestyle modded '96 - '07 will cost anywhere from ~ $2400.00 to ~$20,000.00 depending on how modded you want. Stock, you should be able to get an older round nose for about $1000 - $1500. You can get a squarenose (still excellent for freestyle) for ~ $600.00 - $1000.00 un-modded and about the same price as a roundnose for a modded ski.

Does that answer your questions?

Re: newbie looking for advice

I sold two square nose superjets earlier this summer for about that price. One was stock 650cc with a ride plate, intake and a flame arrestor. The other was a 61x 701 with a Wet Jet pipe, Protec ported cylinder, Protec head, and a few other mods.

I've got a round nose now for a little over the top of your price range ($4500). It has a Team Scream 828cc motor (read $7000 motor in it).

Or I've got two more square noses. One is stock except for the prop (and a nitrous kit, but that is a long story, haha) and one is modded with big bore motor, footholds and aluminum pole etc. Depending on what motor you want in either of them they could be had for $4000 for the pair with a double trailer.

If you are in the Dallas area hit me up.

Aaron

Re: newbie looking for advice

I have a stock class legal 2008 Kawasaki Sxr set up for Closed course racing It has good power and very good handling for bouys. $5000. If you prefer more freestyle abilty I will just put the stock scoop grate and ride plate and flame arrestors back on it so you can spin out and sub it with no worries. There is a guy name Kyle in the Dallas Fort worth area wanting to sell his open freeestyle round nose ski, I think its still blown up though. Your getting good advice, I locate skis on Craigslist Houston and Austin and San Antonio area all the time. If your interested in older model stand ups. I know a guy that has some 1991 650 sxs for sale $650 a piece. no trailer.

Squares = old school freestyle riding
Round = new style freestyle/racing + better carving
Both = awesome!!! and easier to flick around than the super carving race style new kawis

Just be sure its a stand up whatever you decide.

You do realize that a squarenose and a 96-07 roundnose have the exact same hull, right? The only difference is the topdeck (which admittedly does slightly change the center of gravity since the roundnose pole attaches at a higher point, but some might argue that squares should carve better with a lower center of gravity).
