What type of intake grate would be best for riding Lake Michigan?

I will be riding lake michigan a lot this summer and want to know what type of grate would be best for riding/jumping the 4-10 ft waves? (scoop/topploader/others). I will be riding a 440/650 conversion with 550 pump with 17* ss pop, 170psi milled head, stock pipe mod, and 44sbn. I am currenlty looking into the RCJS tri-scoop top loader from Zigler, any input?

Top loader no doubt. Although if you can find a ShredMaster buy it!

Johns Tri scoop is the best!
The big top loaders pull too hard on the bolts and can rip them right out of the hull. Go with Johns

Jet dynamics toploader, if you can find one. Best grate ever produced for any ski IMO

Gordon at Pacific Motorsports in La Habra, CA has a bunch of old PJS toploaders and some Westoast stuff too. I'd go with one of those tried and true parts. Also I'd be rockin' a stock ride plate, or something similar. Keep that nose up and pump the jump!!

Re: What type of intake grate would be best for riding Lake Michigan?

If you are going to be surf riding the face of a wave “not just bashing” a top-loader rides to nose down and could sub when not expected. A two bar grate with a deep primary scoop and a good power prop pulling more water vacuum works best on waves. The big misconception about top-loaders intake grates is they do not increase the flow of water to the prop. A 550-pump can only takes about 8-10 pounds of forced water pressure then it will overload, sometimes back surge ‘not good”. The secondary scoop (top-loader) just pulls the ski down in the water more and the pump has less aeration although dragging a top-loader scoop through the water slows down the speed of the ski. A JD grate is the slowest of them all and that PJS grate was the best on a big mod 550 race ski.
This is what we have rode for 20 years riding the face of waves up to 50’ foot on 550’s >>

Re: What type of intake grate would be best for riding Lake Michigan?

For trailer boaters, there are numerous boat launches, but parking is limited for vehicles with trailers. Luckily, parking shortages do not occur often – only during lakefront events. For example, if you want to drop your boat into Lake Michigan to view the Independence Day Fireworks, you will need to get to the launch before 8 a.m. Or you could launch your boat at one of the suburban boat launches and take one of the canals into Chicago. But that will mean that you will be returning on the canals, and after dark, that is a slow, arduous process. Because Taste of Chicago runs simultaneously with the Independence Day celebration, it would be nice to be able to dock the boat temporarily to pick up some of the fabulous food available at this festival. The best you can do is touch up to the boat wall in Monroe Harbor, let someone off to buy food, and then tour the marina till that person gets back.

That complaint aside, Chicago is a wonderful city for boating. The skyline is the best in the country. Cruise along the shoreline and view the magnificent office buildings, marinas, and parks. Chicago’s founders set the policy that the waterfronts would remain open, clear, and free of any buildings or obstructions. This foresight has provided boaters and pedestrians a beautiful environment to enjoy the lake and beaches of Chicago. Chicago’s lakefront is almost entirely parks and public access facilities.
