Re: hurricane and jet ski

don't go out in hurricane surf for your first time. only consistent, reg surf riders should head into those conditions.

Re: hurricane and jet ski

Being out while any sort of storm is making landfall is a really REALLY bad idea. People have been killed. If you are thrown off, the winds and/or currents can quickly put too much distance between you and the ski for you to ever hope to catch up to it.

Another problem is that you could end up stuck at a boat ramp, unable to leave either because of flooding or the conditions make getting the ski out of the water very difficult. Boat ramps are usually in protected safe marinas, but in a storm all bets are off. You could have storm surge, you could have a pile of debris, or whatever that blocks off the ramp.

Not to mention your tow vehicle, which really likes to get covered in salt water. No rust problems there at all.

If you are a somewhat experienced rider I can see going out the day before a landfall event, or even two days before a landfall event. There will still be waves. Or at least more waves than usual.

But being out while a storm is making landfall is just not the best idea in the world. You should plan to be out of the water and safely inland with plenty of time to spare - so you do not get stuck at the ramp or do not get caught on the road when the stuff hits the fan. Before the outer bands reach you.

Re: hurricane and jet ski

Bill looks like the perfect wave maker to me. 5 star surf rating on Saturday by MagicSeaweed, 5 ft swells at 13 to 16 seconds. I might book a hotel for the weekend and ride over. I'm not missing this.

Re: hurricane and jet ski

No offense, but the fact that you're asking whether to store your ski or ride it in a hurricane screams that you do NOT need to be riding it. Being in those waves is no joke and it can get ugly fast. I rode with a buddy at Ponce Inlet (Daytona) in pre-storm conditions and the whitecap waves that were normally 2-4 feet were 6-9 feet and the swells were 8-12 feet. We were on blasters and having a blast with them, but there was absolutely ZERO room for error. It is not for inexperienced riders.

Re: hurricane and jet ski

Yeah, definatley need expierence out in the big surf. I would never go out when the storm is within a 100 miles of landing. What I was saying is I go out any where between 3 days away up to about a day away. It depends where the storm is, but for instance there was a hurricane that hit the yucatan and then just sat over there for a couple days and that was the best surf riding weather I have seen here in a long time! After the storm is also a great time to ride, the waves are still kicking and makes for a good time. If your serious about riding in 5 - 10 footers, take extra saftey precautions (helmet, even if your on a couch). No telling with these storms, don't be the guy driving around the streets in 100+ winds just because you want to catch that perfect wave... remember, when the winds are high the chop is high!
