I will post them here in a different format shortly, but early congrats to the 2009 standup series champion "no fear" Dereck Mendoza, and repeat sitdown champion "the surgeon" Derek Carlson. It was an awesome year, not only for these 2 racers, but for everyone who ran the series.
Last Sunday there were a couple potentially bad crashes at Taladega. One involved Mark Martin on the last lap. Martin got tagged from behind, spun, and ended up flipping, and sliding on the roof down the main straightaway before ending back up on the tires. Martin kept going and limped to the finishline on 4 flat tires and you can hear his crew chief ask - "Hey buddy, what are you doing, you ok?" Martin's voice defined the word determination when he said - "I'm just trying to get this thing across the line for some points"...
Jimmie Johnson was behind the crash and saw it all happen right in front of him... He got on the radio to his crew chief and immediately asked - "is the 5 ok? Is Mark ok?" Chad replied "he looks ok, he's moving around in there". You could hear relief in Johnson's voice as he simply said - "that was spectacular".
Concern for a fellow racer? Now thats spectacular.
Earlier in the race, Ryan Newman flew upside down through the air in one of the most dramatic nascar crashes I've ever seen. He landed on the roof and you could actually see the roof collapse on the car. What I noticed most was the 4 cars who locked up the brakes to avoid hitting him while he was in a bad situation. What I noticed most was as Newman came to rest on the roof - Kevin Harvick stopped right alongside of him almost as if to show Newman - you're ok buddy, I'm right here, you're not alone. After way too long a wait of not knowing if he was ok or not, they cut the roof off the car and Newman climbed out on his own uninjured. The crash was incredible. Harvick stopping in Newmans view to let him know he was right there... now that was spectacular.
Made me think of you guys.
The exciting racing you put on in a very long series? Incredible.
The sportsmanship you ALWAYS display race after race? Spectacular!
In the enduro series there were a few good crashes and a few breakdowns, but there were ALWAYS fellow racers looking out for the guy in trouble until Team Orange arrived to take over.
In the closed course series, we had a few riders go down, we had a few skis go down, and we even had a ski go rock climbing, but in every incident, there were always fellow racers who took themselves "out of the race" long enough to make sure the guy in trouble was ok and that in my book - is what makes each and everyone of you "spectacular."
We had a great year.
A 12 race series.
An average of 8 classes running 3 heats a day.
Thats about 288 individual heat races for the year running an average of 5 laps per heat.
Thats about 180 laps of racing per class, and 1450 ovarall laps for the season.
I got one word for you in regards to all that DJSA Outlaw Racing - SPECTACULAR.
If you're older, you'll understand what I mean when I say this...
If you're younger, you'll understand it when you get older...
If you're Lil' Dork you'll never understand it but thats ok...
"Winning doesn't always make a winner"
Training hard and racing hard makes you a winner.
Giving 110 percent on the course makes you a winner.
Shaking the hand of a little kid on the breakwall of Suisun makes you a winner.
Watching out for your fellow racer makes you a winner.
Listening during the riders meeting makes you a winner.
Racing safe makes you a winner.
Knowing when to let off makes you a winner.
Climbing back onto that ski after it pitched you off makes you a winner.
Accepting defeat graciously makes you a winner.
Accepting victory graciously makes you a winner.
Saying thanks to an overworked and underpaid staff - makes you a winner.
and when you do cross that line first and get that checkered flag before everyone else? Well thats just icing on the cake...
Again, my very special congrats to Mendoza and Carlson for their outstanding achievement this season. It was amazing - and to the 101 of the best standup racers I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and to the 47 of the best sitdown racers I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and to 11 of the bay area's best amateur freestylist I've ever had the pleasure of watching, I've got 3 words for you all....
"You were spectacular"!
Thanks for a great season. Next year will be even more fun!
