stator?

i already posted this in the seadoo section but i figured i would post here for bill to see.

finally got my 96 XP running. problem though, and i want to say stator. on the hose, it seems to idle decently well until you open the throttle a little. it starts popping and backfiring through carbs and exhaust.

i know that usually means the rotary gear, but here is why i hope it may be the stator and would like to know your guys opinion on it. the new motor is a very low hour motor so i hope it does not have a stripped rotary gear. it looks like the rotary cover has never been off so i dont think the RV is out of timing. the only ignition item i changed from my previous motor is the stator. i used the one that is with the current motor. since when i pulled the front cover from the old motor there was nothing but rust in there. and while the ski was idling you could here the ignition suddenly kick in and out and the motor would idle harder and stronger and then go back to an eh idle. is there any way to clean the rusty stator that actually worked? this is really what i would like ansrewed so that i can swap them and see what happens. even if it doesnt work for long or the symptoms change i will have my answer before i go out and spend $100 on a stator. where can i find the resistances for the stator to test the current one?

and one thing thats got me worried. what color is the factory cavity oil in the case? i found a small amount of clear oil in the crankcase and hope thats not it. the motor did pass a pressure test. held 6psi for a couple hours. or is that not enough?

if it matter to any of the above questions, this is a 787X motor from a 95 xp800.

Re: stator?

Your ignition does not run off of your stator. You have a 787 engine, it has a DC CDI ignition that runs off of your battery, not your stator. The stator is there to produce power to charge your battery.

If a rectifier goes bad, it can effect the way the engine runs above idle rpm, so do the voltage check at the battery to confirm wether or not that you need a new rectifier.

The only thing inside the mag cover that effects the ignition is the ignition pickup and the rotor on the face of the flywheel. It's sole job is to trigger the ignition and tell the coil when to fire.
