Keihin 38 CDK II help?

Bill,

First, just want to say your commitment to the PWC community is greatly appreciated! I am transitioning from snowmobiles to PWC's and have limited experience with Keihin's. Was hoping you have some insight?

To preface, here is my set-up, question to follow. I have a 1990 Kawasaki X2 with a 95 Kaw ZXI 750 motor. Westcoast pipe, WC waterbox, aftermarket flame arrestors. Stock compression (145, 143). Dual carbs, 38mm CDK II. All electrical came from the donor ZXI. Jetting is stock for the ZXI 750 - (verified in another thread).

Was hoping you would know the appropriate pop-off? Read in another thread that it should be up around 40 psi? If so, what spring do you reccomend to start with? I verified jets to stock, but can not find any info on the pop-off. When doing the pop-off, bubbles formed around the needle seat - further inspection revealed bad O-ring's. Hoping dealer has rebuild kit tomorrow. I actually rode it like this for 20 min the other day. NO power, but would rev fine on trailer. Hoping this will solve all my problems? Water line routing was also mis-routed - previous owner.

If I lived in Cali, I would drop this thing off and have you dial it in.

Thanks for your time,
Joe

Re: Keihin 38 CDK II help?

I have almost zero experence rejetting Kehin's for high performance motors. I know only the basics of a Kehin system. When I built my Kawasaki's up, I used Mikuni carbs. Sorry I cannot be of help here.

hmmm... so I stumped the guru... 2 points. Is there a keihin expert that is a member here? I can't see sidelining a set of carbs just because they are not mikuni's.

40psi seems WAY too high. On keihins website it gives you a popoff chart and what springs give you the diff popoffs. I prefer Keihins, as they are easy to tune an work on.

I am not suggesting you get rid of your carbs. I am going to suggest that you place the question in the Kawasaki forum as it is mostly Kawasaki and Polaris that used Kehin carbs.
I also believe Harry Klemm at GroupK may know quite a bit about them too.

Re: Keihin 38 CDK II help?

lemme know if you need info on keihin's jrobert13, i prefer them and only run them on my ski's. They are actually so simple an thats why people sometimes have problems with them, they are over thinking it. Dont get me wrong mikuni's are very nice carbs, but IMO a bit tougher to tune. PM me if you have any questions. And as Bill said Harry at Group K has done a bunch of work with keihins as well
