Hard starting after carb rebuild

Bill,

I have a 95 xp with an 717 engine it had a real bad bog from idle to about 1/4 throttle. After adjusting the low speed adjusters 1/4 turn either way from factory setting with no luck I decided to rebuild the carbs. I used the rebuild kits from SBT and replaced the needle and seats but reused the needle springs and arm because I did not have a pop off tester (they were in good shape) I took it riding today and it ran great, it idles nicely no bog and runs good through all throttle settings but there is one catch, it is now hard to start, it used to start right up now you have to crank it for a while to get it started. What in the fuel pump/carb assy will effect starting but not the rest of how it runs. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Hard starting after carb rebuild

well if everthing in the carb is working as it should, the low speed adjusters are your only possible remedy to a hard staring motor other than replacing the RV cover or bringing a low compression motor back up to spec with new pistons, bore and rings..
You need to figure out if it needs more, or less fuel going into the motor when trying to start it, then adjust for what it needs to fix it. If you need to use the choke, it needs more fuel, if you need to hold the throttle open or cracked open, it needs less fuel.
Chances are, the old '95 motor may have a fairly worn out RV cover on it. If so, that increses the gap clearance of the RV assembly and makes starting more difficult.

If your gaskets under the carbs are not sealed well, it can be hard to start.

Re: Hard starting after carb rebuild

I just read a post about the check valves in the fuel pump need to go with the painted lines facing out. Is this true? if so I may have put them in wrong, the SBT rebuild kit came with instructions and they did not mention this. If they are in wrong will this cause *** to be hard to start???
