A few questions for you Bill

Its me again. LOL Ok so last weekend my girlfriend and i were out riding the skis. The ski she was on beeped and gave the main. code. It showed 12v low so we took them both in and i charged both batteries (the ski she was on and the ski i was on) We took them out the next day and the one i was on did the same thing. We took them back in and since i had bought the cheap batteries i figured this was the problem. I bought two yausa batteries and i also bought a couple of the battery tenders to keep plugged in while they were not being used. I got the batteries in and the tenders hooked up. We rode again this weekend and low and behold the ski she was on gave the 12v low code again. We took them back to the lift and i plugged the tender back up on hers and it began charging. I hooked the one up on my ski and it showed the battery was fully charged. So this is the question. I know this means the battery is not being charged. I will start by checking the connections which i know should be fine and then do a test to see if the voltage increases as i give it more throttle when it is running. If it does not show the battery is being charged what should i check next? I guess what i am trying to ask is what would be the procedure and what should i be looking for. Again it is a 2002 gtx di. Thanks Bill

Re: A few questions for you Bill

Section 10, subsection 03 OEM Service manual, Charging system.

You have two fuses on a DI powered ski that need to be checked. One 25 amp fuse on the MPEM, and one 30 amp fuse in the rear electrical box.

Place a voltmeter onto the battery posts. With the engine not running, make a note of the voltage in the battery.
Start engine, rev to 6000 rpm and read voltage again.
It should be more than what was in the battery not running, but under 15 vdc total. If not within that parameter, have the stator tested. The rectifier is part of the MPEM and not replaceable as a seperate unit.

If you need a new stator for a DI, I have two new ones for 1/2 price.

Re: A few questions for you Bill

Ok Bill i checked the fuses up front and all were fine. I couldnt find the fuses in the rear. Could you give me an idea where to look? I also checked the voltage at the battery. It was 14.03 volts sitting. which i had just removed it from the battery charger and put it back in but when i fired it up and revved the engine it zoomed to over 16 volts. The repair manual says it is a bad regulator. What should i try next. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: A few questions for you Bill

I think you answered your own question. Bad regulator/rectifier.

Re: A few questions for you Bill

I figured as much. If i read the shop manual correctly the regulator/rectifier is part of the mpem. Is that correct? Any idea where to get one that will not break me?

Re: A few questions for you Bill

I found the rectifier/regulator at the local dealer. He is asking 140 for it and the ones online are like 130. He has one in stock so i am going to pick it up today. He also said he could rebuild the water regulator for me too. I called another local shop here that is not a dealer but just a repair shop and they wanted 175 bucks for the rectifier. I guess they have to order it from the dealer and add a percentage to it. Either that or they are used to the folks around here just paying the price they want them to pay. Thanks for your help Bill.

Re: A few questions for you Bill

Just wanted to say thanks again Bill. I finally got the rectifier/regulator put on the ski saturday. I checked the volts with a meter. Battery read 14 volts with ski off and then 14.6 volts with the ski on and revved to around 6 thousand. We rode all day saturday and no 12v low code. Looks like another problem solved without having to go to the dealer. Thanks again Bill for your help. This is a great site for those of us who enjoy riding skis but hate going to the dealer for minor repairs.

Re: A few questions for you Bill

Another question for you Bill. I took the ski out that has low rpm issues and did the test with the seat off and i crimped the line going into the exhaust from the regulator. It actually slowed it down a few hundred rpms. I did the test you recomended before where i pull the line off and check for a pressure decrease which it did not do. When i let go of the line it jumped to 6380 rpm. I put the seat on and its back to 6120. Seat off= 6380 and 52 mph. Seat on= 6120 and 48 mph. Whats next to check?
