Bill im new. Help please

Hey Bill im new to owning a pwc. I recently bought a 1996 Seadoo 800 XP. They guy i bought it from blocked off the oil pump, so now i pre mix. Also the fuel selector has been bypassed. He also put the wiring harness from a 1998 seadoo in this bike for what reason i dont know, im assuming it needed replaced and he had a 1998 available. Also the wear ring was just replaced. From what i listed above do you think any thing should be changed?Im having big problems with the bike.I took it out one day and it ran fine for about 15min then when i turned it off in the water and went to ride a few min later it bogged down hard and would run like crap.It would idle fine but as soon as i gave it gas it would pop up on a plane and fall back on its face. I drove it back to the boat ramp about 1/2 mile at idle and giving it some gas but it ran horrible when i gave it any gas. The more i gave it the worse it was. I got it home and there was alot of water in it.Me and my dad went through it and cleaned the fuel filter, replaced plugs and gaped the to .025 and drained fuel tank (the gas smelled old). I premixed to 32:1 with seadoo synthetic and 93oct gas.Took it out again with my girl friend and once again ran fine for 15-20 min. Stopped at a island and when we went to leave once agon did the same thing!Got it back to boat ramp the same way as before and it was filled with water up the the drive shaft all the way up the were the oil tank is to the rear of the ski!I got home and ran a hose ove top of the ski and think i found where water is comming from. It does not have mats in the foot wells and there are about 15-20 holes on each footwell and water is slowley getting in through there. I ordered hydroturf so hopefully that is the only place water is comming in from. Do you have any other ideas as to where so much water could be comming in from? And what do you think could be wrong with the motor? Carbs need rebuilt? When we looked at them they looked clean, but who knows if they have ever been gone through. Please help me out. I know your the man to go to for PWC help. Thanks in advanceJosh

Re: Bill im new. Help please

someone told me i should clip the plug wires back about 1inch.
also they told me if it smells like fuel in the hull that i could have an exhaust leak and that its not able to breathing properly and sucking in exhaust gases and to try running on water with seat off and see if those two things fix my problem.
Any truth to these ideas?
Where can i get a carb rebuild kit for a fair price?

the water came in from the mat rivet holes? I'd run a hose over them to confirm. you may be getting the ignition sys wet causing your performance to suffer.

yes i ran water over them and water came in.
i siliconed them and no more water comming in through there.

the box where the coils are is wet inside, also looks like someone put silicone over the coils, not sure if to keep dry or to fix something wrong with them. i think i might hsve them replaced

remove the stator cover and see if water got in there. also scrape the silicone off the coils and check for cracks. run it again to see if you solved you water problem.

Josh,
Plug the holes with epoxy before you install the mat kit.
Remove and go through the carbs, filters may be clogged up.
Be sure the rectifier is working properly. You should get a good charging of the battery when the engine is reved up, but not more than 14.8 vdc.

Re: Bill im new. Help please

That black box where the coil is is supposed to be dry inside. Clean it out good and dry the internals. There is a bolt that is on the coil with 3 other black wires on it. This is the main ground for the coil. IF it is corroded at all, the corrosion will act like a resistor, heat up and break contact. This will cuase the ski to run very badly. There is supposed to be a rubber oring looking gasket on the lip of the lid for that box, make sure it is there. Also the plug that goes in the top is supposed to have a seal there too. I would bet you have a combo meal of issues here. The corrosion in the black box and the carbs needing cleaned and new kits put in. Make sure to clean out the tiny filters in each carb behind the fuel pump bodies. You need to look in the grey box too if it still has one, the MPEM is in there. Make sure it is dry inside. I read it was converted with a 98 harness, so not sure what style ignition you have now though. I would not use silicon on the holes in the footpad area. Use a 2 part epoxy, it will get hard and not rub out like silicon.
