98 xpl pump ??

Bill I remember an earlier post , but cant find it, about making a 98 xpl pump work with the newer style seal.. im running a 98 xpl pump in a 2000 xp, with the 2000 seal. I believe you mentioned trimming the front edge of the pump 1/4 inch or so, to allow room for the seal? am I on the right track? thanks again mike b

Re: 98 xpl pump ??

I have spent time carefully trimming down the rubber seal so it would fit into the pump support plate and I got one to work that way as I hate sticking the pumps in with silicone on the racing boats becuse they come in and out often. But for a Rec boat, just use silicone and pull the pump like it was an older model Sea Doo.

Sea Doo machined a recess around the outer diameter of the '99 and later model pump housings for the seal to slide onto the housing without expanding the outside diameter of the rubber seal. The '98 pump, does not have that recess, so you have to stretch it a bit to get it to go onto the housing and then it won't fit into the support plate, and if you try to force it in there with the hold down nuts, it will not seal and the boat cavatates badly.

I did come up with another solution. I made flat rubber rings to glue into the support plate so the wear ring could seat up against the rubber seal that I made. I used some smooth mat stock from Hydro Turf and a minimum amount of silicone just around the outer edges of the housing to give me some insurance that it would not allow air into the pump. But I do not think a rec boat would need that silicone. Our race boat pumps are working a bit harder than any rec pump needs to work with some of the impellors we use, so I did it for the insurance.
