98 Sea Doo GTX LTD question

Hi Bill,
I have a 98 Sea Doo GTX LTD that was fine last year, I had it winterized and this year when we got it out on the lake, it would only run about half throttle. When out of the water, it does rev up with no issue, but when it idles, it sounds different than normal, like an extra clang in there somewhere. I brought it in to the local dealer, they told me the crabs have varnish in them, so they would need to remove, clean and replace a couple parts. $115. for parts, $400 labor and $65. for diag. It seems odd they would be varnished up to that point, I just don’t want to pay $600 and have it do the same thing. Also, is there an option to use a chemical clean while running like with a car? If not, how much work is it to remove, clean and install the carbs. I can do this easy on a car, but have never worked on a PWC before.
Thanks

Re: 98 Sea Doo GTX LTD question

No you cannot fix them with chemicals, but you could send them here for about 1/2 that price or less and get the carbs fixed.

Re: 98 Sea Doo GTX LTD question

Thanks Bill.
Does it sound like a good diagnostic for the issue I described? If so, how difficult is it to pull the carbs to send in? Is a repair manual available to describe the steps?
Thanks

Re: 98 Sea Doo GTX LTD question

You can download the service manual at the top of the Sea Doo forum for free.

It is not that difficult to remove carbs. And yes, it does sound like you need to rebuild the carbs.
