2000 Sea Doo RX & Fire Extinguisher

Bill, I posted the following thread as my "new bee" greeting and it did not get much constructive response (although I'm sure it generated a chuckle or two). Can you please provide me with some technical assessment on what I can / should do with the 951 engine at this point? I did the compression test last night on the cylinders and they are both at 118 to 120 (3 readings each, both plugs removed). I'm leaning towards replacing the "spark arrestor / noise muffler" and possibly rebuilding the carbs....but not sure that would help? Also, the engine just turned over 100 hours and the MAINT statement came up on the guage. What maintenance is needed and what do I do to reset that guage message? Thank-you....

The New Bee Thread:
Ok, it's my fault - I left a Kidde Marine fire extinquisher (quart sized) in the front storage compartment of my 2000 Sea Doo RX. By the middle of the day, it had bounced around so much that it exploded - literally, the top broke off and it expelled it's contents all over the interior of that compartment and some of it went into the hull and engine area.

She severely lost power. Was running around 68 MPH, went down to 45 MPH (per the speedo).

I took the jet ski out of the water, to a local car wash and pressure washed everything out, took out the spark arrestor / noise muffler (plastic cover for the carb's), cleaned that all out with water, then carb cleaner. Sprayed the carb cleaner in the carbs and cylinders.

She still runs but lost the top end.

I have pulled her out of the water and will be doing a compression test to see if there was any serious damage to the cylinders.

The fire extinquisher's contents were WHITE in color, and powdery....

Any ideas or suggestions (besides securing the fire extinguisher next time!)? - JerBear....

Re: 2000 Sea Doo RX & Fire Extinguisher

I suggest you contact me and I will explain about the carbs and any performance mods that can help you gian some speed and rpm. I have the parts here that you need.
In the meantime, I want you to beg, borrow or buy a good quality compression guage and recheck your compression. You need to be up around 130-135 psi. Rotax motors do not lose 20 psi for no reason without some sort of damages to the pistons or rings.
To get rid of the maint flashing on your dash, while it is flashing, hold the set button depressed for 3 seconds, or until it quits flashing, Release the button. 25 hours later, it will reappear.
Maintence consists of changing the oil in the jetpump cone, cleaning the rave valves, cleaning the front fuel filter bowl, lubing the driveshaft zerk fitting, checking compression and battery water levels.
At 100 hours, it is wise to clean out the carbureators, replace any rotted fuel lines, check the fuel selector valve for clogs, pop off test the needle valves in the carbs and be sure the accellerator pump is functioning.
The free service manual that is here for the taking will guide you through each of these processes and has the answers to almost every question you have asked us here. Download it, print it, study it.
