SXR 849 or Factory Wet Pipe?

Hi Harry,

I have a SXR with a Sleeper kit (82.5) and pretty happy with the performance but looking for more HP/MPH on 93 pump gas platform. I have ridden a 93 Hammer Kit with the FP DRY Pipe and loved it but all the reliablity issues with pipe cracking, oring maint and crank life got me looking at other options. I am leaning torward to add a FP wetpipe or go with the 849 kit. Have you set up any SXRs using the wetpipe? If so, what kind of results did you end up with as far as MPH and fuel consumsion?

Thanks,
Dano 7

If you mount the dry pipe correctly you will not have any issues. Make sure it is all squared up and not on a bind. You also want to make sure where the pipe and manifold meets is not on a bind. Pipe alignment is key. Change the lord mounts once in a while and you are good to go. Keep your rpms in the low 7's and you should get some good crank life.

Re: SXR 849 or Factory Wet Pipe?

Dano,
It's a common question. For sure we have prepped plenty of SXR Sleepers with a wet pipe.... and they run great (when they are proped to reach the 7300rpm smooth-water target). The only down sides is that the fuel consumption is nearly doubled, and the crankshaft life is definately shortened by the added RPMs. Addressing these problems were the main reasons we developed the 849 Sleeper package. The 849 Sleeper only turns 7000 rpms, but it has the torque to pull a steeper prop (Skat 9/17 C-75 Swirl) up to 54-55 mph (the same speeds that the stock bore SXR runs with the wet pipe).

The nice part is that the 849 Sleeper has the same fuel range as a stock SXR,and much better crank life prospects than a wet-pipe equipped boat. The wide powerband and great fuel range of the 849 Sleeper Kit has made it a favorite of wave jumpers and amatuer freestylers. It bears noting that the 849 Sleeper gets a nice boost in overall response from the re-plumbing mod done to the stock pipe ($110).

If you already have the Sleeper kit, converting it to a 849 Sleeper costs $610 (instead of the full $1190 for a stock boat)....... Hope that answers your question.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm

Harry,

Thanks for the info. Is the $610 price is just for pistons and boring the stock cylinder sleeves? What would be the total with resleeving?

Thanks,
Dano 7

You only to need to re-sleeve if you've got a 750 cylinder.

fwiw I've got a 840 setup collecting dust since the winter if you'd be interested...I was going to run it with a FPP dry pipe in the vets class, but changed my mind.

I was thinking of using a cylinder from my SXIPRO that was a 800cc GroupK 93 hammer. A lower rod bearing let go and cracked one of the sleeves thus needing the resleeve. I wanted to keep my current SXR cylinder as a spare. I might be interested in your 840. Is the top end fresh or does it need a replaced? Post or PM me how much your looking to get for it.

Thanks,
Dano 7

Re: SXR 849 or Factory Wet Pipe?

Harry,

After looking at the pros/cons, I've decieded that I am going to try the FP wet pipe with your Sleeper kit. Do you have any jetting specs for this application?

Thanks,
Dano 7

Re: SXR 849 or Factory Wet Pipe?

The only change would be to go to 175 main jets.
