Porting/Polishing Question. +Much More

I know this may seem trivial but when you do your port/polish do you use flow bench tester?

Also, I am conjuring up what I am going to do on my build this winter. I have a 650sx and would like to get a more linear power out of her with the good portion on the bottom end. I would like your suggestions on a few things as I am considering sending my project your way for the machine work. (I have heard only good things about your shop).

1. Would a guy be better off setting himself up with 700 cases instead of maximizing the potential of his 650 cases? I do want to keep my 650 engine in my 650 but if the bottom end is a 650 still I would be happy as I would not have to change all my electronics etc.
2. If a guy were to use 700 cases will the exh/intake manifolds mate? I have a factory pipe sitting around and a mikuni 44sbn waiting on the sidelines for Christmas break from work/school.
3. If I stay with the 650 I am thinking of taking it 1 over in piston size. Using a 700's girdled head...question is what domes should a guy use on a setup like that for optimum output?
4. In the winter months what are you hours like? Turnaround time? Do I need to schedule? If I would like to see the work back by lets say December 21st when should I have it to you by?
5. I am considering PistonX piston kit. What has been your experince with them? Failures abound or a good way to go?

you can use 650 mag cup/stator assy on the 750 engine. I think GroupK has a tech article mentioning this and I know he still offers the case mod to allow bolting on the 650 front end on a 750 engine. Something to consider....

The kawi 750 sleeper set up runs very well, i have one now and couldn't be happier with performance for the reliability and fuel range i have.

BTW - if you have them do the work, make sure you mention if you ride at 3000'+ ??

Harry,

Do you use a flow bench tester when port/polishing?

Thanks,

Re: Porting/Polishing Question. +Much More

We do not use a flow bench .... and this is a subject that's been blogged to death on many other forums.

Flow benches can be a very effective tool for 4 cycle cylinderhead modification, however not for a two stroke application. There are numerous high priorities for two stoke porting (such as actual port timing, port widths and roof contours, exhaust lead times (aka blowdown times), affects of exhaust system back pressures, raw fuel atomization, affects of inlet signal, and inlet tract resonation, ....just to name a few) that a flow bench has no way of evaluating and/or measuring. As a result, the flow bench (which is a great tool for four strokes) turns out to be not too effective in developing or evaluating two sroke porting.

Can one put a two stroke cylinder on a flow bench and turn it on ... sure. Unfoutunately, the information that you get is close to useless for improving the highest priority issues of 2 stroke porting.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm
