Piston ring eng gap on Hammer 701

Hello Harry,
I have a 61X 701 with your hammer kit upgrades and wanted to know your recommendations for piston ring end gap for Vertex pistons (.75 over). These are new pistons and rings with a fresh bore at .004". This engine also has an ADA head with 35mm domes, FP Limited B-Pipe, 46mm Black Jack carb, your lightened flywheel, and Advent Ignition.
By the way, would you agree that I should break this engine in with the ignition set to 24°, the setting closest to stock?
Many thanks,
Johnny

.018 to .020 works really good. .004 sounds a little tight for piston clearance break it in easy.

Re: Piston ring eng gap on Hammer 701

Johnny,
Generally you don't get much choice on the endgap. To be sure endgap shouldn't be under .015".... but If you set up the clearance at .004" it's likely your a bit over .015" right now. Setting endgap only becomes an issue on engines that are set up with particulaly close piston clearances (if you fit the piston at .003" you may be under .015" endgap).

I agree the closer to stock timing is better for break-in.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm

It's only at .009" now so I'll file them to at least .015" then. And break in slowing with stock timing.
Thank you!
