550 westcoast mod

hi Harry
i am rebuilding a 550 mod with a westcoast motor, to as new .as i have have gone all retro .
my question is, can i use the stock carbs from a sxr 800 with an adaptor plate?
if so what would be a starting point for the jet sizes
as it is dificult to find out what is in the orginal round carbs
allthough the the pistons and head ,looked like they had a good burn pattern
Kind regards
Geoff

Re: 550 westcoast mod

Geoff,
While the SXR carbs seem like a good choice, other options might be better. The 550 inlet tracts are about 105 mm center to center while the SXR is about 120mm .... and the linkage between the SXR carbs will not shrink that much. A better choice would be some SD 720 38mm carbs (110mm cnt/cntr). They have better chances of adapting to your center to center limits, and the 38s will have better signal that the 40s.

I have no ideas on starting jetting, the round bodies have fixed jets that were drilled, not changed.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm
