1100 Exhaust Port clean up

Hi Harry, I am rebuilding a 1999 1100stx Motor. The motor need new pistons and a bore so I was thinking of cleaning and matching
up the Exhaust manifold to the Cyl. This is a stock ski is it worth the effort.
also what specs should I use for the piston clearance. I am using Weisco 81mm
pistons.

Re: 1100 Exhaust Port clean up

Frank,
The ex manifold matching is always nice to do.... but on a stocker won't make a "big" difference. For a stock 1100, you get the biggest bang for the buck by milling the head (we do it for $190) to get 150-160 psi. The boring is a great idea .... .004" clearance is good with a long (2 hour) break-in.

DO NOT raise the exhaust ports on your 1100 cylinder. Also, if you have the CV carbs KEEP the entire stock flame arrestor.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm

Thanks Harry, Iam going to pickup a extra head and send it out after I put some time on. I also have a zxi 900 that my buddy Big Wave Dave milled the head on. This Woke up the ski right up... BTW why the stock flame arrestor.

Re: 1100 Exhaust Port clean up

The CV type carbs used on later 1100s "need" the restriction of the stock flame arrester to have the right signal strength to meter safely at 70% throttle. With free-er breathing aftermaket arrestors, you will develop a 70% throttle lean condition that cannot be jetted out.

Respectfully, Harry Klemm

Harry,
I noticed you said not to raise port timing. Why is that?

Re: 1100 Exhaust Port clean up

1100s are basicly a 750 with another cylinder added. The 1100s carry "alot" more exhaust port timing than any standup .... and in my minds eye, the ragged edge of what is needed or benificial.
