Dana Point to Avalon Sprint Race! Sign Up Now!

Dana Point Harbor: http://www.danapointharbor.com/
Link to Dana Point (Orange County, Ca): http://www.danapoint.org/
Map /Picture: http://maps.google.com/maps?sourceid...num=1&ct=title
Link to Catalina Island: http://www.catalina.com/main.html

Here is what it will likely look like (all of this is subject to change):

1. First weekend in April, 2009
2. Start at Dana Point at 8 am
3. Sprint across the channel approx. 37 miles one way.
4. First one to Avalon wins. It is a one way race (craft can not make it there and back on one tank)
5. The Race is over at Avalon. The racer goes into Avalon, refuels at the Avalon fuel dock. All racers shall have a "buddy" wingman for the RETURN ride back (not for the race out - the race to Avalon is a race), wingman will be another racer that you can meet up with after you get to Avalon (no compromises, you will stay with your buddy for the return trip back from Avalon - the return trip is not a race) - racer and his/her buddy will return together across the channel at a safe pace.
6. Awards given at 1 pm
7. Similar classes as the LB2CAT
8. Cost: Approx. 225.00 to 250.00 (must cover permits, fees and insurance)
9. Should we have a minimum of 30 entries on race day, the overall race winner will be awarded his or her entry fee back after the race is completed.
10. This will be an APBA sanctioned race.

The APBA Single event membership should be approx. $20 for the weekend but if the racer joins for the year they don't have pay individually for each event- ie: Mark Hahn, DP Offshore Challenge, Long Beach 2 Cat Offshore Race and Salton Sea 300.

Also, No one has to join Sea-Tow, it is just HIGHLY recommended!

Dear PWC Endurance Athlete,

Please find attached the entry form for the Dana Point to Avalon Offshore Sprint scheduled for April 5, 2009. We remain excited about another great offshore event! Ross Wallach / R.P.M. Racing Enterprises is the promoter of this race, this is the same promoter for the annual LB2CAT Race. As a reminder, I am not a promoter - I am just acting as a racer rep in pursuit of assisting Ross / RPM Racing in spreading the word about the race. Yes, I pay all of the same full race fees that you pay.

In this down economy, we should be thankful that promoters are stepping up to take on these race events. Having witnessed the process that R.P.M. Racing Enterprises goes through to coordinate these races including but not limited to safety measures, coordination with the Coast Guard, permits, port authorities, coordination with Catalina Island etc., as racers we thank them for making it happen. To reciprocate, committed racers need to get their entry forms in ASAP - ideally by March 1. This will enable the promoter to ensure that he has the sufficient revenue to offset his costs for the race. As a fellow racer who wants to see more offshore events, I'm sure you agree that it merits our responsiveness with the entry form.

1) Yes this is an APBA sanctioned event.

2) R.P.M. Racing Enterprises has agreed to allow the reduced race for the Sportsman Class. The Sportsman Class is only (ONLY) offered to those that have not done an offshore PWC race before. This includes the LB2CAT Race. If this is indeed your very first offshore race, then you may sign up to race Sportsman.

3) With 30 paid entries there on race day, there will be a $500.00 payout to the winner! (There will be no payout if there is only 29 paid entries on race day)

R.P.M. Racing Enterprises will be communicating the detailed race schedule and coordination of events in the days to come. We look forward to seeing you!

Dana Point to Avalon Training Ride 3/29/09

SUBJECT: Trawlercat Chronicles – 03/29/09
Dana Point to Avalon Training Ride: Eight boats departed Dana Point this morning for one last attempt at Avalon for next weekend’s Dana Point to Avalon Sprint. If you missed it - visit pwcoffshore.com for more info. At first I thought we looked and resembled like a pod of dolphins running into the mixed swells towards our Avalon chosen destination. And then it occurred to me that maybe we more resembled a pack of gazelles. For you see, they say that every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up and knows that it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will likely become food. And just like clockwork every morning a lion wakes up and it knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it would eventually become too weak to hunt and starve to death.

I don’t know who the lions or the gazelles were this morning but it sure felt good when seventeen miles out Santiago was the first to cry uncle. Just a little wrenched back probably from one of those waves we all encountered this morning; every so often just for the fun of it one wave turns out higher than the set with a high lip and just when you aren’t expecting it – bam – you are now airborne longer than before. With the Seadoo airborne it probably didn’t help much that he was resting on that seat when he landed.

And that’s when we all turned out to be gazelles. I’ll admit it; I was the first one to volunteer to escort him back – but then a strange thing happened. The pack, pod or whatever you choose to call this group just wanted to stay together. Anything to stop this abuse to ski and body! John, Mark and I had nothing to prove today for we already did this run the day before.

Will the fastest boats win the race? Only if you can predict what the seas will be doing come race day. One thing for sure is to watch the techniques of your fellow riders running in full motion, airborne with skis sometimes airborne for long distances. This is akin to poetry in motion. We may not be as strong or brilliant in our techniques but one area we can work on is our technique. Technique, stamina and certainly a fast running ski is certainly acquirable.

If the seas are anything like they were today then try not to get caught in the middle of two skis while you fast approach their converging swell. Another thing to do is not to find a comfort angle to hit those seas and keep going without keeping an eye on the pack. Sometimes the pack is going in the right direction. Our little ride went something like this. Staying hooked up and on the water; then making physical contact with a launching wave, getting launched, air time, (nice, awkward or slapping hard landing) then a bucketful of water in the face, then do it all over again. Worse part is trying to anticipate that landing when you are briefly blinded by the water in the face. I did that once and when I still had air time my consciousness was so surprised that when I finally landed it almost hurt.

Our one gazelle that we thought was the weakest was now leading the pack on the trip home. The seas were now looking good with the silver speaks all over the ocean where the overcast sun shone. We could now see while riding fast with maybe a little water in the face, on some occasions. If you are racing next weekend - Navigation will certainly help. Making sure you have the right water goggles will definitely help and most of all it doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle - when Ross Wallach on the start boat waves that green flag; starting rolling and go when that green flag drops.

For you see when the sun finally comes up, when all else fails, go like hell for there is surely safety in numbers.

See you on the water!

Trawlercat

P.S. Remember - we don’t want any false starts – do you best to stay in your lane as this is simply a straight line course for 37 miles.
