91' 550sx questions

Ok I have a 1991 550sx with a pipe and a ride plate.
My first question is that this ski is a pain to tune the carb on. It runs great but when i fall it turns around and dies. What should I do to make this stop so the ski will continue to run?

My next question is that are there anymore upgrades that are worth my time and money to buy and put on?

Thanks Justin

Re: 91' 550sx questions

welcome to the board, what kind of carb to do you have? pics are awesome, esspecialy engine pics. im parting a 91 550 sx right now it was a great ski i just wanted a sj.
and you prob just need to set the idle up a little, if it doesnt have a lanyard its not a bad thing that it dies ive had mine get a lot farther away from me then i wanted. sometimes they take a little while before they turn.
and i would deff mod it if you want to keep it, mine had sevaral things on it and ran great it had enough power to have fun with. most a/m parts can be had pretty resonably and are common on the boards.

Re: 91' 550sx questions

I will post some pictures. I forgot to say that i have an aftermarket head on it and i have a new gasket but i am not sure what to torque should be on the head bolts. My uncle traded it for my six wheeler so i will be keeping it for a while. I am getting ready to paint it purple with pink flames. I will post pictures as soon as i can.

Re: 91' 550sx questions

if you have the keihin carb on it it's very easy to tune and very reliable ...if it still gives you headaches , rebuilt it if the gaskets and diaphragm seem worn .....if you still face problems look elsewhere like worn crankseals , pretty common on old 55o's......
...for more performance get the cylinder ported to match your pipe .....a lightweight flywheel helps a little as well as a 42 keihin rather than the stock 38 one ......if that is not enough power ...get another ski!!!!

Re: 91' 550sx questions

i turned my idle down on my 94 550sx just enough for it to die when i let my figure off the throttle because i've know people who have had there ski's not turn off and just keep idleing stright into a dock LMAO so a lanyard is a helluva invention
