SUMMIT DAY ONE
Monday December 8, 2008 (8:30am-3:00pm)
· Commencement Invocation: LAMAKU O KA NA’AUAO (Tom Pohaku Stone)

Pupukahi I holomua e Kulia I ka Nu’u
(Unite to move forward and strive for the summit.)
Explanation: By working together, we make progress. This saying would be especially applicable to us as Hawaiians on our canoes where each paddler would have to pull the paddles together on command in order to make the canoe move forward quickly to reach our destination or goal.

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 (8:30am-3:00pm)

E lauhoe main a wa’a; I ke ka, I ka hoe; I ka hoe, I ke ka; pae I ka nalu
(Paddle together, bail, paddle; paddle, bail; paddle into the wave.)
Explanation: If everybody works together the work will be done quickly.
On inter-island voyages by canoe, the two most important tools besides the sail were the paddles and the bailer. In heavy seas, the water would wash over the boat and so one or more natives would do constant bailing. Others would be paddling together on command to reach their destination in the shortest time and catching a wave made the crossing faster.

Re: K38 International PWC Safety Summit 2008 Hawaii Dec 4-12

Sorry I couldn't attend the other days, but Luigi my son and I started a search and rescue on the other side of the island. unfortunately the diver is still missing and the weather force us to stopped the search

Searchers unable to find signs of diver

Coast Guard crews continued a search Wednesday for a diver reported missing Tuesday afternoon about five miles west of Maui.

Rescue crews hadn't found any sign of 69-year-old James Tam Sing, who was wearing a black wet suit and scuba gear. He was on a commercial fishing boat and diving with three other people when he went missing at about 1 p.m., the Coast Guard reported.

After being contacted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Coast Guard crews were on scene at 2:40 p.m. and searched throughout the night. A rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point, a Coast Guard Station Maui small-boat crew, a crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Ahi and Maui Fire Department personnel were searching the channel between Lahaina and Lanai for Tam Sing.

The search continued Wednesday, with officials planning to assess the situation after sunset.

Shawn, so tried to make it over to the islands. It is learning I crave and the folks that made it to the Summit are so blessed with the learnings they recieved. I see a few familar faces in your photo. When the island peps shared the spiritual side of themselves in Moro Bay I told myself then I would make it over there to absorb some carma. Ahhhh but to run into reality here was overpowering. Missed the experiance but will continue to share the K38 way with others ! AND ALWAYS WILL CONTINUE TO LEARN AND GROW---WHO KNOWS THE LIFE I SAVE MIGHT BE MY OWN---ASK ME HOW I KNOW! * Smile Up And Ride!... John Bonkowski / PigDog

Re: K38 International PWC Safety Summit 2008 Hawaii Dec 4-12

I had a good time as well and am glad that Jen, my wife and I (deaf couple, matching life jackets in photo ) flew over from Oahu for the course. We both had nearly zero PWC experience and wanted to make sure we got into the sport the right away without creating any problems for the PWC community or endangering anybody.

Since we had already taken the state-required certification courses (which is not adequate IMHO due to the lack of hands-on stuff), we benefited the most from listening to the personal stories shared by Shawn Alladio and Tom Stone. There's a wealth of information, tips and advice right there that isn't available anywhere else.

The hands-on stuff was fun and educational as well. We focused on moving around on a PWC, boarding/disembarking, low-speed maneuvering drills and conscious/unconscious body pick-ups. This is probably what will benefit me the most in the end as that's not really something I would have thought to practice on my own before tacking some big waves or going free-diving with a PWC. I even had one of my childhood idols (Darrick Doerner - big wave surfer) as my instructor on the first day. The instructors were all great as well, very upbeat, patient and positive.

Thank you everybody.

Paul!
So good to hear from you!
We had fun huh? But I know it was a struggle and probably frustrating for you at some points. Would be better to train with you independently, but we are so impressed by you and your wife. Ben from the UK says CHEERS!
Merry Christmas, keep in touch!

Fun indeed!

Thank you for the pictures. We'll use 'em in our "update email" that we send out roughly every month to our families on the mainland and I will be encouraging PWC owners to take the K38 courses.
