Upcoming boater safety courses---(Various States)

This will be the "sticky" for upcoming boaters safety courses! We'll keep this updated as best we can, so check back to see if there's a course offered near you!

ALABAMA:
Quote:
The Eastern Shore Flotilla of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer its "SAFE BOATING" course on Jan. 21 at the Weeks Bay Reserve on Highway 98 south of Fairhope.

Course hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The auxiliary will also give free vessel safety checks at nearby Fish River Marina and Pelican Point (Viewpoint) launch ramps from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The course has been revised to include demonstrations in boat handling, boat launching, navigation and marlinspike at the dock. It is designed for recreational boaters and personal watercraft operators. Families are encouraged to take the class together.

From Boat-Ed.com

Quote:
Official Boating Safety Courses and Online Tests for Your Boat License or Boater Safety Certification

Boat Ed is the only place on the Web where you can study the official boating safety manual developed specifically for your state government's boating agency. After studying the course material and taking an online boater exam, students who pass will receive their official boater education certification. You can be certain that the boating certification card you receive for passing the online boating test will be recognized by the officers on the waterways.
Official Online Boater License or Certification Available for 32 States...see if your state is listed!

Re: Upcoming boater safety courses---(Various States)

Thanks for the link,
I'll be passing this to a couple of freinds that need it.
And I'll also be doing it myself.

Next up, Texas water rescue and marine medical training?

Auxiliary calls for early sign-up for spring boating course!

ROCKPORT (Jan 16): The Coast Guard Auxiliary is putting the spring boating season on a fast track with a call for early registration for its annual adult-ed course in safe-boating fundamentals.

Anyone interested in the Auxiliary’s eight-week basic boating course, to be held at the Camden Hills Regional High School, is asked to contact lead instructor Darrell Gilman at 338-5516, no later than Tuesday, Jan. 24 to pre-register. If needed, registration may be done on the first night of class.

Classes meet 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays, from Jan. 25 through March 22, with one week off when local schools are on spring break. A $50 enrollment fee covers 14 hours of instruction, a text and study guide. For discussion of equipment and maintenance, one class will be held off campus at a local marine dealership.

Course topics include boat types, equipment and motors, trailering, boat-handling, aids to navigation, a navigation overview, lines and knot-tying, weather and radio procedure. Instruction applies to both coastal and inland boating.

Developed under auspices of the landmark federal Boat Safety Act of 1971 and approved by U.S. Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, the course has graduated millions of boaters nationwide. Local instructors are members of the Auxiliary’s Rockland-Belfast area Penobscot Bay flotilla.

Coast Guard support of classroom study reflects the fact its accident statistics consistently show that boater inexperience contributes markedly to serious accidents afloat. In recent years, as many as 85 percent of boating fatalities involved persons who never took a boating course. Four boaters died in Maine waters last year. Not one was wearing a life jacket.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary dates from 1939 when Congress authorized organization of a body of unpaid, volunteer U.S. boat owners overseen by the commandant of the Coast Guard. Today, the organization has some 37,000 members nationwide and more than 100 in units from Rockland to Eastport.

The Penobscot Bay Flotilla, chartered in the late 1950s, meets at 7 p.m. the second Monday monthly at the Rockland Coast Guard Station, at 54 Tillson Avenue in Rockland.
