| Team Tex Star Racers Perform Rescue at Lake Somerville---(Texas) This was sent to me from Friebe1..great article! Thanks! Quote:
Sunday afternoon during a practice session at Welch park, racers in attendance were met with a small problem. A patron at the lake came speeding up to the pit on the beach where the racers were taking a short break trying to summon help for his brother. They were alerted to a pair of jet skis that were across the lake that had capsized and riders were in the water. They were informed that there were 2 adults and 2 children on the skis and the 2 adults could not swim. Racers Joe Williams, Jim Taubert, and Wesley Hamff responded aboard 3 SeaDoo RXP's. While the trio sped across the mile of water to the victims, Tim Hamff obtained additional information from the reporting person that the victims had been in the 68 degree water over 12 minutes had no protective clothing except for swim suits and a life jacket. An organized a response from local authorities was then summoned.
On arrival, the children had reboarded one of the skis and were safely afloat. The adults were still in the water clinging to the overturned ski. With the ski waterlogged the adults were then attempted to be loaded onto the RXP's. Due to the victims incapacitation from hypothermia, Joe Williams dove into the water and had to ballast the front of the ski with his body clinging to the underside of the bow whereas Jim Taubert could hoist one of the victims aboard over the rear. Victims and skis were then towed to the pit area on shore.
First aid measures were then rendered by Tim Hamff to offset effects of a soon to be life threating stage of hypothermia until local EMS units arrived and assumed care. In the mean time, Joe Willaims dewatered the overturned ski and was able to get it restarted to save the motor for the family. Incident was resolved with no injuries to victims and were released by medical personnel.
The family involved was very grateful to the generosity of our TeamSport family and stated that they would definately be coming to the race events to show their support.
As a rule on exposure guidelines, a person has roughly 60 minutes of survival time in 60 degree water from exposure. With or without a wetsuit, reguardless of physical condition. Water transfers heat over 200 times faster than air.
