Rescuer is popular choice for hero award---(Michigan)

Quote:
When he saw a plane crash into Lake Huron last summer, he didn't hesitate to speed on his personal watercraft toward the wreckage and rescue the plane's floating passengers.

Matthew Jamison, 35, a Port Huron native living in Novi, was honored Thursday for his heroic efforts after the June 26 crash in Fort Gratiot at an Everyday Heroes luncheon organized by the Southeastern Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The Red Cross awarded several individuals for worthy humanitarian acts at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center in Detroit.

Jamison received the Red Cross' first People's Choice Award. He garnered the most online votes of three individuals selected by the Red Cross as finalists. The finalists' stories were posted on a Red Cross Web site so people could vote for their favorite, said his father, Gordon Jamison of Port Huron, the Port Huron Area School District athletic director.

"It was quite unexpected on his part," Jamison said. The family gathered at the Renaissance Center for the awards ceremony.

"Of course we're proud of him," he said.

Matthew Jamison was the first on the scene when a twin-engine 1972 Piper landed just before 2 p.m. June 26 about 150 feet offshore and sank into the water east of Gratiot Avenue and Keewahdin Road.

He made two trips on his personal watercraft to rescue the pilot, a Marysville man, and one of the passengers. Four others made their own way to shore or were rescued by others.

"It was more curiosity than anything. He just reacted," Gordon Jamison said.
