| Regional council reviews safety rules for Lake Ruataniwha--(New Zealand) Quote:
Powered craft could be banned from Lake Ruataniwha between 10am and 4pm daily under new safety plans being considered by Environment Canterbury (ECan).
Allowing wardens to limit the number of power boats and giving Rowing New Zealand the power to close the central South Island lake for a number of days each year are among other proposals on which the Canterbury regional council is seeking feedback.
ECan senior policy analyst Frank Stewart said congestion potentially endangering rowers on man-made Lake Ruataniwha in the Mackenzie Basin had prompted a review of the council's navigation rules at the lake.
Rowing NZ has regatta management rights to Lake Ruataniwha, which hosts many South Island rowing associations, schools and clubs for training camps, and is the venue for two national regattas a year.
Mr Stewart said a fatal jetski collision early last month happened about midway through the lake bylaw review process.
Maritime New Zealand is investigating the January 8 collision that killed mother-of-two Leslie (crrct) Visser, 38, of Rangiora, northwest of Christchurch, when her jetski was run over by another being ridden by her husband, Gavin Visser.
A Maritime NZ spokeswoman said today the investigation, being done in conjunction with police, was in its early stages and a finding was possibly "some months" away.
Mr Stewart said while last month's tragedy happened at a time when the lake was not congested, overcrowding remained an issue.
"It's becoming difficult (at times) to maintain a 50m separation distance from another vessel," he said.
Rowing NZ and other groups with interests in water activities at Lake Ruataniwha made submissions in response to the navigation safety bylaws which ECan "considered favourably", he said. But the rules needed to be reviewed and the public consulted before formal proposals were put forward.
ECan was writing to local enforcement officers, Fish and Game, district councils, government departments, and rowing, canoe and power boating clubs to encourage their submissions.
