PWCs speed from Dana Point to Catalina

PWCs Speed From Dana Point to Catalina

Thursday, August 21, 2008 1000 AM

CATALINA — More than 50 participating personal watercraft crossed the Catalina Channel as a crowd of spectators waited for their return in the 18th annual PWC Adventure from Dana Point to Catalina, July 25-27.

Revving Up — A large fleet of personal watercraft raced from Dana Point to Avalon during the 18th annual PWC Adventure, July 25-27.

It was the biggest group of personal watercraft ever to cruise from the mainland to the island, said Kendal White, special events coordinator.

“Due to the way the economy has turned out, and with high fuel prices, we didn’t think we would have this many participants for this event,” White said. “We had expected half of that (group of 50) to come.”

Participants came from as far as New Mexico to run to Catalina with other personal watercraft lovers. The three-day event, sponsored by North County Yamaha, was filled with food, fun and games at Catalina after all racers made it to the finishing line.

Though this event did not have winners for fastest time, lighthearted awards were presented — including “No One Left Behind” honors, given to a participant whose personal watercraft stalled. He was towed all the way to Catalina.

All participants had to be at least 18 years old — but age didn’t matter for George Miranda, 65, who joined in the event.

“The people were great, and we saw a lot of new faces — along with the return of our regulars,” White said.
