Misadventures can be as epic as true adventures when riding waves. Anyone from pro surfers to enthusiasts to journalists contributed gripping true stories to this collection. Big wave surfer and female watercraft driver Shawn Alladio and surfer and biologist Jeff Phillips will be on hand to recount their tales.

Right on - so good to see Shawnie getting some much deserved press. This woman is tops in the field of rescue work where pwc are utilized...and SO exceptionally modest it's not even funny. I am proud to call her my mentor and friend.

I think Shawn needs to send me an autographed copy of the book so I don't tell about the time she was training my crew of jetski racers how to lower their slalom times at Spikes Ranch........There is more to that story... LOL!

Bill,
I'm sure there are several of us who have "Shawn" stories. Mine however have to do with her total commitment to accomplishment of specific missions, commitments made a personal cost for Shawn. She carried me for years when I worked at one of the OEMs and I'll never forget.

For sure....she should be inducted into the IJSBA Hall of Fame for the years and years of dedicated service she's given our sport.

Re: PWC Surf Rescue Book Reading/sigining available in California

Alrighty - Seems like every day I am more blown away by what Shawn Alladio has done, and is doing for our sport.

I just got this email.....and if you have been keeping up to date on what's going on with the no-access crowd, this is HUGE! The Surfrider Foundation pretty much hates PWC, but Shawn and her program are showing them way to the truth:

Various chapters of the Surfrider Foundation have for years been opposed to PWC access and use. However the Santa Barbara Chapter posted the following positive profile of Shawn and her PWC rescue activities in conjunction with a book signing session coming up at Borders Books in S.B. Kawasaki is sponsoring Shawn and K38 Rescue with JET SKI watercraft and supplies for 2006

Here's the article on Surfrider Foundation's site:

Surf Book Reading--Wednesday, April 26th, 7PM
Borders Bookstore -- 900 State St. Santa Barbara
Surfing's Greatest Misadventures:
Dropping In on the Unexpected

About the book

The true stories in this one-of-a-kind collection cross the spectrum from terrifying to comical to downright bizarre. Prepare yourself for the most gripping and unbelievable stories about big waves, shark attacks, tsunamis, boating disasters, devastating wipeouts, pranks, and bad judgment calls. These thirty tales, by surf journalists, filmmakers, magazine editors, watermen, and everyday surfers, illuminate the less enchanting aspects of a life committed to surf. See more about the book at www.thesurfbook.com <http://www.thesurfbook.com>

About Jeff and Shawn:

JEFF PHILLIPS started surfing while studying abroad in Australia. Since then, he has traveled the world in search of epic waves, often accompanied by his Border Collie, Idaho. A Bay Area native, he returned to surf Ocean Beach for years before moving to Santa Barbara to pursue his master’s degree in environmental science. He now works as a Fish and Wildlife
biologist. When he’s not surfing, Jeff satisfies his taste for adventure by
mountain biking, rock climbing, fly-fishing, and white water rafting.

SHAWN ALLADIO is the founder of K38 Water Safety and K38 Maritime Security Training. She is the mother of two and one of the few women to venture into the men’s world of extreme big-wave surfing. There are many brave men who aren’t asleep in the deep because of Shawn Alladio. She is one of the world’s most experienced personal watercraft (PWC) drivers in heavy water conditions. She has a thriving business teaching PWC driving and rescue techniques. She educates law enforcement, lifeguards, tow surfers, and the military. She is the only female instructor in the entire Navy SEALS program. She also provides water safety management to big-wave contests around the world. As a professional PWC racer, she holds national and world titles for endurance racing.
