| Minimum age for operating personal watercraft to rise ALBANY, N.Y. The minimum age for operating a Jet-Ski or other personal watercraft will rise in the New Year.
Instead of ten years old, kids will have to be 14 before they can operate the watercraft. They'll also have to get safety training or be accompanied by someone at least 18 years old who has had the training.
The legislation is the latest in what has been an ongoing debate over use of personal watercraft. Teens may not like the new rules, but manufacturers say they support mandatory training which leads to a safety certificate.
New York was one of only three states that allowed ten-year-olds to operate personal watercraft alone.
While sales of the boats have declined, about 20 (m) million Americans ride personal watercraft each year. http://www.wstm.com/Global/story.asp?S=4289269&nav=2aKD
