Legislation would bar watercraft passengers from riding in front---(Connecticut)

Quote:
State lawmakers sent a bill to Gov. M. Jodi Rell today that prohibits anyone from riding in front of the operator of a personal watercraft, such as a Jet Ski.

The legislation also prohibits any passenger from riding behind the operator unless he is able to securely hold on to the person in front of him or to the watercraft's handholds. Additionally, the passenger must keep both feet on the craft's deck to maintain balance while it operates.

Lawmakers said such legislation is needed to protect children.

Violators would be subject to fines ranging from $60 to $250 for each violation. If Rell signs the bill it will take effect October First.

Many people are not aware, but this is already law in California - Kids are easily crushed or can receive facial/cranial injury from impacting the steering on a pwc.

Thats why people with 1 or more oz. of common sense don't ride full speed or in choppy water with a kid in front of them. Another attempt at making stupidity illegal.

You know It's Correct. I'm tired of seeing laws passed like this that Screw Everyone like me who takes my little nephews for an easy ride on the river because of some dim witted moron goes out and smashes his kid up I think those should be chalked up to nature doing it's job

I think that there's an award for stupid people.

Isn't it called the Darwin Award?

Typically the people that do such stupid things, are the poeple with more money than sense. I agree that riding a young person in front of the driver can be dangerous, but it can be done safely if you are aware of what you are doing i.e. not out wave jumping, riding in bad chop, or just sitting to close to the handlebars. Its usally the first time riders that buy a machine (the fastest they can afford, alot of times in pairs) then get all of their friends (that have never ridden any ski before) to come over and "ride" the new toy(s) with total disreguard for rules, regulations, or other boaters. Then when screwing around colide and kill someone. We all should not have to suffer for others stupid actions. Pretty soon they are going to fine people for smoking, at the rate our goveronment makes laws. People choose to kill themselves in this manner everyday and yet life for others goes on. Just because you choose to do something that can hurt others doesn't mean a law should be passed against it. More people drown each year, than get injured or killed on PWC. We choose to drive our cars everyday, yet everyday you are taking a chance in one of they most deadly weapons ever created. http://www.uscgboating.org/statistics/Boating_Statistics_2004.pdf#search='fatal%20boatin g%20accident%20statistics'

Re: Legislation would bar watercraft passengers from riding in front---(Connecticut)

On a more serious note... on my lake, i've heard more about deaths and serious injuries from jetskiers not observing regular and proper boating laws, rather than people getting hurt from riding in front. Just a few years ago, there was a death due to a jetskier running over another jetskier because one jetskier stopped abruptly at a no-wake zone coming into a marina, and the second jetskier was following too closely. And didn't stop for his friend.

Jet skis are powerful machines, and even though i'm a newbie to this thread, i've been boating since I was a wee lad, and know the proper boating laws. It upsets me when some new people to the sport disregard the rules because they don't know about them.

Laws are for our own good, but sometimes laws are only to appease the people -- there's not much of a way to enforce it.
