Kite-surfer escapes drowning (South Africa)

CAPE TOWN – A kite-surfer escaped possible drowning after he was blown out to sea at Bloubergstrand in Cape Town on Thursday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
Andries Fourie had been blown out 1.5 nautical miles into the sea before an on-looker used his jetski to save him, NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said.
Fourie was blown out to sea when a light breeze changed direction.
He told rescuers that he was reluctant to let go of his kite to paddle back to shore and that was why he did not attempt to swim back after noticing how far in he was.
Fourie was not injured in the incident. – Sapa.

So i better get in better shape in other words. Looks like a hell of a good time, but I think you need to live on the beach to use it much.

You're a puppet hanging from strings. I have many friends who kitesurf, upper body strength helps but you don't have to be ripped to kitesurf. You hook in to a harness and use your body weight, somewhat simuliar to windsurfing.
