Husband kills wife in jetski collision---(New Zealand)

Quote:
A woman riding a jetski on a central South Island lake yesterday was run over and killed by her husband riding another jetski beside her.

Attempts to revive Rangiora woman Leslie Fay Visser, 38, after the crash on Lake Ruataniwha in the Mackenzie Country yesterday were unsuccessful, police said today.

A post mortem examination would be done in Timaru today.

Police are refusing to release Ms Visser's husband's name.

Timaru police area commander Dave Gaskin Gaskin said it was not police policy to release the names of other persons involved in similar situations.

Senior Constable Brent Swanson, of Twizel police, said it appeared Ms Visser turned in front of her husband's jet ski and he drove over the top of her.

A family friend and the couple's two children, aged seven and 10, were at the lake but did not see the collision.

Mr Swanson said Ms Visser's husband recovered his wife from the water and rode with her on his jetski to the rowing complex boat ramp where initial attempts were made to revive her.

Ambulance staff also attempted resuscitation without success.

Police are investigating and want to hear from anyone who witnessed the tragedy.

Ms Visser's husband and children had returned to their Rangiora home and were being supported by family and Victim Support volunteers.

No further details were immediately available.

The death of a 38-year-old Rangiora woman at Lake Ruataniwha, near Twizel, on Sunday is a timely reminder to take care on the water, according to Lake Hood management committee chairman Bryan Donaldson.
Leslie Fay Visser, 38, of Rangiora was run over and killed by her husband riding another jetski beside her on Sunday, after apparently turning in front of him, on Lake Ruataniwha.
Mr Donaldson said the accident was a “horrible stark reminder” of the dangers involved with boating and water sports.
The Lake Hood management committee recently employed security firm Chubb to make regular patrols of the lake, and pull up anyone who was not obeying the rules which applied to the lake.
Mr Donaldson said the firm was doing a good job, and those who had been approached as part of the patrols had reacted well, and understood what they had done wrong.
Already this year, the lake had been the scene of a couple of collisions, Mr Donaldson said, between jetskis and boats, with both causing damage to the vessels, and one causing minor injury.
He said it was just a matter of commonsense, and following three main rules – making sure you had an observer, travelling in the right direction around the lake, and keeping away from other lake users.
“I was down there a few days ago, and there was two lots of people who were towing without an observer, and unfortunately both were on jetskis,” Mr Donaldson said.
“Any jetski capable of towing is able to carry an observer.”
He said other lake users were seen to be not wearing life jackets, but once approached, they put them on.
“People have a perception that with jetskis, because they are smaller, they are safer,” Mr Donaldson said.
However, Sunday’s accident at Lake Ruataniwha was a tragic reminder that that was not the case.
While Lake Hood had a separate area for jetskis which people wanted to operate around buoys, which was also open to jet boats, jetskis were often found on the main lake.
The rules of the lake were set out in black and white around the perimeter, and Mr Donaldson said there was no excuse for not knowing them, although many people did plead ignorance when stopped.
He said Chubb was doing a good job policing the lake and its surrounding areas, but they were no different from the police highway patrol, and could not be there to see everything.
For the volume of people who used the lake, Mr Donaldson said it was lucky that Lake Hood had not been the scene of more serious accidents, but all it took to prevent them from occurring was a bit of commonsense.

I dont get that statement. Does that mean they let too many people on it. Maybe they should limit the amount of people on it.

I'm betting the hubby's name was Mr. Visser...

Isn't there an NBC sportscaster names Leslie Visser??

Hey man I'm with you on this one, I have been riding for many yrs an for a long time I was the only one riding a stand up and a Jammer in my area, then more and more irresponsible peoples cam along and created a huge mess.
I had one incident with a couch ride 2 yrs ago at the lake, I was surfing my board when a couch rider came directly at me and run me over, I was laying on my board and he passed over my legs without killing me, so i was good for a good old fight with some where 10 to 15 teens and I was by my self the best of all this guy was drunk and he saying that I had to get of his water or else, Then Charly showed up and drag me out of that mess then I call the cops, tickets got given and never seen those guy again.
See ya A.. hole who ever you are and if you read this stay away from me and other.
