On behalf of the Dept. of Boating and Waterways Director...

On behalf of the Dept. of Boating and Waterways Director, Ray Tsuneyoshi…

Good afternoon,

As you know, the State of California continues dealing with Quagga/Zebra mussels. The spread of these mussels threatens aquatic ecosystems and fisheries, water delivery systems, hydroelectric facilities, agriculture, recreational boating and fishing, and the environment in general.

California Departments of Boating and Waterways (DBW), Fish and Game, Water Resources, and Food and Agriculture are asking boaters to clean, drain and dry their boats to stop the spread of these harmful mussels.

By doing this, boaters will help protect the environment, their boats and avoid quarantines or being turned away from a water destination. In addition to being sure to clean, drain and dry watercraft, DBW urges boaters to plan for possible launch restrictions and inspections by calling water bodies before leaving home (http://www.dbw.ca.gov/maps/).

Programs and requirements vary and can change rapidly. Can you please share this information with your members via e-mail blasts, newsletter, Web site postings, etc. To aide you in this effort, DBW has created a web page with helpful information to ensure that boaters enjoy this boating season (http://www.dbw.ca.gov/BoaterInfo/QuaggaLoc.aspx).

I’ve also attached the following items that can be posted on your Web sites.

1.Memorial Day Quagga/Zebra Press Release

2.3X5 Mussel Card

3.Quagga Mussel Web Button. Link to http://www.dbw.ca.gov/BoaterInfo/QuaggaLoc.aspx

4.Boat Cleaning Guide Book Should you have any questions, please contact Gloria Sandoval at 916.263.0788 or gsandoval@dbw.ca.gov.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Raynor Tsuneyoshi,
DirectorDept. of Boating and Waterways

It only takes a few minutes to clean and dry your boat to ensure these invasive mussels don't continue to spread. PLEASE take the time and set a good example...you wouldn't believe how harmful these little buggers are.
