'Assault by Watercraft': Man Charged With Severing Wife's Arm With Ski Boat Propeller

More inductees into the 2% Club

SPOKANE, Wash. — A man driving a 20-foot ski boat on Newman Lake ran over his wife after she was thrown into the water Wednesday and the boat propeller severed her left arm, a Spokane County sheriff's deputy said.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and was expected to survive.

Robert Kienel, 27, of Spokane, was arrested for investigation of assault by watercraft, a Class C felony, Marine Deputy Patrick Bloomer said in a statement.

The deputy said the couple took possession of the ski boat Wednesday afternoon and the woman was riding on the boat's bow while the man drove. She was thrown into the lake when her husband took a hard turn at about 30 mph, the deputy said.

The arm, severed below the elbow, apparently sank and emergency crews could not recover it.

Bloomer said the floor of the boat was "littered with empty beer and wine" containers.

The boat was seized as evidence and the case remains under investigation.

Seriously.....WTF is wrong with people? My family owns a marina on Lake St. Clair and you should see just how many people blast the docks and run the sea walls after a day on the water. Come on people.......

Re: 'Assault by Watercraft': Man Charged With Severing Wife's Arm With Ski Boat Propeller

While it is unfortunate that this woman suffered the loss of her arm . . . . . I see something that disturbs me even more in how this story was reported . . . . .

The continued attempts of the media to negatively portray personal watercraft . . . . .

This wasn't an "Assault by watercraft" as headline stated, it was a drunken "BOATING" accident.

When you say "watercraft" most people think immediately of PWC's . . . . I have seen enough stories reported like this to be convinced that it is being done intentionally because of media bias and is not just coincedence or paranoia. I feel that the term "watercraft" should not have appeared anywhere in the story.

I even read one account where "local boaters" where credited for being responsible for finding a lost child . . . . . . the pictures showed Yamaha Waverunners, not boats were used to locate the missing girl.

It seemed to me that they did not want to report it in a way that gave a positive image to PWC's as a useful or helpful member of the boating community.

JMO . . . . . as always . . . .

Re: 'Assault by Watercraft': Man Charged With Severing Wife's Arm With Ski Boat Propeller

To be fair, the headline in this actual story was only quoting the specific charge as per paragraph 3. All other references to the craft by the author referred to it as a "boat".

Take your point, though. I used to get annoyed (along with many others)when the press would refer to motorcyclists as 'bikies', rather than 'bikers'. Nowadays they refer to everyone as just bikers, even bikies!

S'pose it's better that way - just.

When sitting at the Marina, we take bets as to which boats will hit the dock. Newer boats almost always come in fast enough to give the dock a kiss.

Thank God I've never seen anything worse, like this.

Some kid, somewhere on that lake, is in for a lifetime of therapy after that arm finally does resurface...

News like this only deeply saddens me all the more... I can't tell you how many times I've been on the lake and the friendliest (truly) waving I've gotten from boaters (as my wife and I pass by on our skis) was from people waving with the hand holding the beer bottle/can, with the other hand on the steering wheel of the boat... truly scarey...

Re: 'Assault by Watercraft': Man Charged With Severing Wife's Arm With Ski Boat Propeller

when I was young and parker was the happening place, we would party at sundance and foxys and on numerous occasions we would see a girl get propped, one minute dog waddling in the water with a killer body and bikini and the next minute blood and limbs everywhere from getting ran over by a drunk boater, another sign of the times was them old noisy boats with the big chrome pipes would burn girls legs all the time, those boats made tons of noise and were slow as hell
