Quick survey, are we faster now?

We did one more thing yesterday, for now only members can search. We ran all night without a crash and it seems to be pretty quick right now. Do you guys notice a difference is speed and response time?

Once we get our new server up, we will start adding back features like searches for guest, the arcade, etc. We might even let the Yahoo slurps come back. But for now, our number one goal is to keep the site up and stable for the next week or two while we get the new hardware installed and running.

Re: Quick survey, are we faster now?

It's definitely better than it has been over the last several days. Usually, the only time I really notice that there's a problem/slow-down is when there's a major problem (i.e. the site won't pull up at all, but it's been fine all day today.)

Re: Quick survey, are we faster now?

Today has been a crappy day. We've been crashing every couple of hours all afternoon. Why? We really don't know. We have lots of theories, but nothing concrete. Vbulletin tech support is not so great. The way this site works is that we run a base Vbulletin package (3.5) and then about 10 third party modules. When you call Vbulletin and say you have a problem, they instantly start blaming all of the third party modules that are installed. So before long, everybody is pointing at everybody else.

The best theory we have is that one of the third party modules has reached its limit and is overloading the server. Which one? Nobody can say for sure. So now what we have to do is start turning off features until we become stable. We might also have to upgrade to Vbulletin 3.7 which would give the site a new simplified look until we are able to start slowly adding back third party program features.

And on top of all of this, we cannot say for sure that we are not being attacked. There are hole websites dedicated to providing insites on how to disrupt, hack into, and reek total havoc on a Vbulletin forum. We would like to think that we are not a victim of such a crime, but it's possible. And as many of you know from the porn pms, we've been attacked before.

Once again, sorry for the problems. All I can say for sure is that several of us are losing a lot of sleep trying to figure out what is going on.

Re: Quick survey, are we faster now?

You might want to check out phpbb. I don't honestly know of speed or security comparisons between the two programs, but it's something you could check out. Since it's open source, it should have pretty good support online. I guess that would be a pretty big switch though.

It seemed to be working better recently then it had a few days ago. I was definitely noticing some lag/complete downtime. I assume you've checked error logs. You've got a good strategy going though; disable all the fun stuff and see what happens. If it still crashes, you've got attackers. Unless you've made some other recent changes...

Did I mention open source software is free?
