Harry Goatcher Pro Mod 550...to mod or not to mod some more...

So I picked up Goatcher's 93' Pro Mod 550 for a sweet deal! Even came with a Westcoast rolling stand for free and the hull and paint are still beautiful. It's complete and everything looks to be in good condition other than it needing a a fresh top end and crank. Everything looks to have been smoothed out pretty good and the porting is top notch. However...I am having a personal dilemma. The drive shaft is OEM 440, the bottom's of the dual 38's hang into the intake tract's, the cases are untouched other than the pulse fitting's and the bearing housing for the drive shaft still utilizes packed grease vs. the ATF conversion. Sooooo...should I restore the ski as is or should I modify the things I would have expected to be modded on a full blown race ski? My other concern is screwing up the dynamics if this ski...one of those mods could change everything when you have such a finicky motor, but I just don't see it and I desperately want to correct the stock or bolt on deficiencies...I need input. Does anyone know if that ski had all those mods done but things got changed down the road as it passed through owners or thats just how it was?

go ask the ski clinic. My vote is to port the cases, go dual 44 carbs, ATF conversion and an afterburner pump.

650 pump conversion- SXR prop cut to fit 650 pump repitched to a 9/17, TBM pump stuffer, OP nozzles, and OP skegged ride plate.

Re: Harry Goatcher Pro Mod 550...to mod or not to mod some more...

Dual 44's are way to much for a 550 (44's are to big and don't produce enough intake velocity which kills low end and throttle response) in my opinion and it has the original stainless PJS afterburner on it already. I talked to Derek at ski clinic and he said the cases were left like that purposely...however Derek's 550 information has been a little blotchy in the past as far as I am concerned. He's more of a Superjet and freestyle guy. I don't want really to change anything on this ski, just finish what was started.

I don't understand the comment on dual 38's dropping into the intake track.

Dual 44's are fine for this cylinder. My PJS t-3 motor runs dual 46's. Also has SST 440 afterburner pump, Al driveshaft, total loss, 20 pitch prop. Power hits hard from bottom to top over 8,500 RPM.

Yes I do have pics I will put some up in a little bit. The carbs are smaller than the intake tracts so they hang over when you look in from the reed side of the manifold. I dont want to change anything on this ski other than what might have been changed through the years as it changed hands. trying to keep it original...as if it would have came from the west coast race effort back when it first sold.

Re: Harry Goatcher Pro Mod 550...to mod or not to mod some more...

If the carb opening is smaller than the intake manifold opening, that is OK.

This boat never "first sold". It was built by the westcoast race team and given to Harry...maybe he had some skin in it.
