Cooling line / routing

Alright guys - I have a few questions. I am in the process of rebuilding my JS 550 with a 650 swap. I have a few questions / concerns, and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

I have heard that running dual cooling on a 650 is not only unnecessary, but could cause cold seizures - is there any truth to this? My 550 is all set up for dual cooling and I'm trying to figure out what to do here. If dual cooling is 'ok' on the 650's (mind you, I live in MI, and water temps are like bath water in the summer), how should I run the cooling lines? two into the exhaust mani, out of the head to the pipe, from the pipe, t off to a pisser and the other part of the t to the tailcone?

If I do not run dual cooling on the motor (both inlets going to the exhaust mani), should I run one to the motor and out to a pisser, and the other to my Westcoast pipe and out to an additional pisser? Or will I loose too much power keeping the pipe that cool?

And finally, what level of pressure will be seen throughout the cooling system? I want to run clear cooling lines so that I can physically view if there are any blockages, but I don't want to be out riding and have a line burst and fry the motor.

Re: Cooling line / routing

You are in no danger of bursting your cooling lines

Sorry, let me clarify - I would like to run some 3/8 clear fuel line for cooling lines. is this going to be an issue

Re: Cooling line / routing

no. i plan on doing the clear with the nylon reinforcement and red tracer for added kink resistance while still letting me watch the flow

that doesn't answer my question - I don't care about the nylon reinforcement and red tracer.... Will a standard, transparent fuel line be able to withstand the constant pressure variation of the cooling system WITHOUT the reinforcement lines....

Re: Cooling line / routing

You only need dual cool if your ski needs it. It is not a performance upgrade. Only you can tell us how hot your ski is running. As far as routing, two or one to the mani one out the head to the pipe then a line from the pipe to stinger with a t for the pisser. If you run dual the other line from your head can go right to a pisser. You would be better off using the clear lines with the reinforcement built in.

Re: Cooling line / routing

Phil,

I set mine up with dual cooing with the same routing you described. I dont think that there will be an issue, just make sure to warm it up on the cold days before tou get into the throttle. Also, you can get the clear braided PVC hose from lowes for .66 a foot and it looks damn nice, have it on all my skis now.

Joe

Hey there Joe! You got that swap ski done yet? I just ordered some transparent blue coolant line... Should look pretty good.

So you have two into the exhaust mani, out of the head to the pipe, from the pipe, t'd off to a pisser and the other part of the t to the tailcone?

I've always used the rule of two inlets, two outlets... I don't want to be filling up the waterbox with water...
