Tech question

Hi all, if i upgrade to the newer driveshaft and coupler on a 1997 monte carlo 770 do i need to change the floating bearing setup or can i use the original parts still and one more question, should there be a rubber tab on both ends of the driveshaft. Thanks

Re: Tech question

Why are you upgrading shafts? Most of the time people upgrade because they are having leaking issues. If this is the case with you, you must replace the floating bearing when you replace the driveshaft.

As far as the rubber plugs go. There is one on the impeller (splined) end of the shaft, but there isn't one on the engine (threaded) side of the shaft. Of course this only applies to the new (updated) driveshaft kit.

I would ASSUME that the older dual splined shafts have rubber stoppers on both ends. This is to protect the end of the shaft in the event of the splines bottoming out,

Good luck!

Re: Tech question

Thanks I think the ex owner of the machine sucked up a rock, and the driveshaft end going into the coupler is stripped. I would love to find a used driveshaft but am having trouble lining one up. I did only find a rubber stopper on the end of the shaft that goes into the impeller. And in trying to get the seals and bearings out of the floating bearing assembly i think i have hurt the casing so i need a new one but wanted to make sure the old size floating bearing will fit the updated shaft if that is the way i end up having to go. Again thanks

Re: Tech question

Yea I believe the shafts are the same diameter. When I replaced my floating bearing assy I just replaced it as a unit. There was too much wear. While you are working on the driveline consider replacing the pump seals and bearings. It is good preventitave maintaince.

Re: Tech question

Thanks Krispy, I already have the new stator with new bearings seals and shaft, as the stator was destroyed by whatever the ex owner sucked through the jet

Re: Tech question

Can you mesure the length of your old shaft with the old style coupler. Basicly from where the PTO seats against the motor to the end of the shaft without the rubber bumper. I was not able to cross refrence the part numbers to see if they are the same from a 97 MC 770 to a 98 TS770L. The new style shaft is 18" long and the new coupler would add about 2-3" when installed. I will have to remove it before I can get an accurate mesurement.

Re: Tech question

Does anybody know if this worked? I would like to put the '98 style shaft and coupler on a '97 I'm working on.
