1995 Tiger shark tear down??

I am about to start tearing into two tiger sharks to make one good one and had a couple questions first. 1st jet ski I think it had a rock run through the impeller so it runs good but when running the shaft out of the motor spins and nothing after that. That round thing with the rubber between the two pieces doesn't move just makes a wicked squeal noise because the shaft is turning inside it i think. Is there a pin in there that shears? 2nd jet ski has some of the exhaust parts loosened up and taken apart hanging there and there is quit a bit of oil coming out of them. Otherwise i think the impeller and everything else is good. Not sure which one would be an easier fix. Anyone have any ideas or advice? Thanks. I think they are Daytona 650's?

Keep the ski with the good pump and impeller and put the good engine in it.
Pulling an engine is easier than pulling a pump.

i've done both swaps already. i actually found that changing out the drive and pump is easier than changing motors. no wiring or cables to mess with other than the wires for the trim motor and trim indicator cable. other than that it was very easy to remove the entire pump and drive shaft. as for the drive coupler, it is a threaded coupler and must have stripped when the rocks got in the impeller. here are a couple of pics of the shark that i built out of three.

no matter what way you should decide to go with this project i would think it to be a good idea to pull the pump down for inspection ,routine maint. and possible repairs.just my 2 pennies that it would be to your advantage in the long run

You have to take something like that apart. There are threads on the aluminum pump / engine coupler that could have striped.
Or the impeller could be so bent it is contacting the ware ring and or is striped. 3rd the drive shaft could have twisted the splines.
However you look at it, its not a big deal.

There is no sheer pin, the punp found its match and is locked up. Take it down the problem will jump right out at you.

If you sucked up anything the impeller IS bent out of pitch and balance. I bent one on a muscle shell, "See Impros" for R&R on that.

Re: 1995 Tiger shark tear down??

I was given a 1995 Montego Deluxe by my uncle, who was tired of it taking up space. He knew it was running rich but didn't know why, I went straight to the carb and found that it was ruined (lots of rust). So, I replaced the carb and for good measure I replaced all the fuel lines too (they were cracking). I figured I was good to go. I put synthetic gear oil in the pump and about an hour later found that it had all leaked out the front seal. So, I pulled the driveshaft with a slide hammer and figured I would replace the front and rear seals while i was at it. When I pulled the drive shaft I found that the front bearing had seized, and that the driveshaft was ruined. So, I completely rebuilt the jet pump (driveshaft, bearings, seals). I eventually pulled the pump housing just to make it easier to work on the thing too. I finished it at the end of the summer, before I could put it in the water, but it starts and runs fine. It will just need tuned in the water once the engine has load on it.

The moral of the story
is that in the end I'm glad that I had to do everything I did (except spend the money) because I know my ski inside and out, and I'm confident that I can repair/replace anything on it. If i were you I'd pull the pump completely and at the very least replace the seals, as they're only supposed to last 5 years anyway. Get to know your ski, you'll thank yourself when you REALLY break something.

The one that runs but as a stipped coupler will have to be taken apart and see what part is broken and stripped. As far as the other one is there any parts missing or all there and just needs put back together? You could just keep them both and get both of them running. Tigershark parts are not that hard to find.

Press the blue bilge pump botton on the left side on top, water will come out if there is any in the hull or bilge. Or take a gallon of water pour it in the hull and fire it up. It should pump it all out automatically.
There is a very small hose for a battery breather on the right also, carefull there may be acid in the line.

640 or 770 not 660 The thru Hull fitting on right (starboard) is bilge pump.the thru Hull fitting on left is cooling water outlet
My 98 770 TSL has bilge pump outlet @ rear by stering nozzle.and cooling water disharge(bypass) on port side. Also used to hookup FW Hose to flush engine
