Polaris Virage Coupler Removal

Good morning, I need to replace the coupler on my 2003 Virage. I have read about using cotton rope down one of the cylinders. Has anyone done this? Does it work? Any other suggestions?

Thanks
TM

Re: Polaris Virage Coupler Removal

The rope trick works good. You need to put the rope in the pto cylinder(closest to the coupler) and make sure your piston is coming up on the stroke AND PISTON IS ABOVE THE EXHAUST/INTAKE PORTS!!!! Stuff as much of the rope in the hole as you can without moving the piston down. Make sure the rope you are going to use is not crumbly. Reasonable force should loosen the coupler. If you are replacing coupler because of stripped splines, you might want to check pump alignment with coupler. Make sure your shaft has the rubber bumpers on each end of the shaft.

hope this will help

Re: Polaris Virage Coupler Removal

Not to add more but is cotton rope the only rope or can I use a blend that is soft like cotton. I am having a hard time locating cotton rope.

Thanks

I think the soft twist type nylon would work fine. Just make sure it is not crumbly. I personally wouldn't use something like a ski rope. Maybe something like the good quality 3/8" dock rope, you know, the soft sythetic twisted type.
