Removing Flywheel

Does anyone know how to remove the flywheel on an 86 js550. I took the cover off and got the bolt off, but the actual flywheel will not come off. I've pulled, twisted, and tapped it from behind with a hammer; with no avail. I read in my Clymers manual that you need a "Flywheel Puller" but in the past, it would just pull right off.

Thanks

I got a flywheel puller, but when i connected it on the flywheel i cranked it down and it isnt coming off. It cranks down to the point where it will spin the drive shaft... not sure what to do now. any thoughts?

Re: Removing Flywheel

Try some propane, or map gas heat just around the base of the wheel....near where the crank is in the wheel. Don't heat the crank, the metal of the wheel, and not to long, maybe two minutes...then hit the tightened puller end with a dead blow or brass hammer. Also, it is critical that the puller is on 100% straight...that is a key to an easy pull.

Re: Removing Flywheel

I have tightened the puller as far as it will go, and now tried hitting the end with the hammer. it is still stuck on there. would you suggest using like a propane torch? and heat what part of the flywheel?

Re: Removing Flywheel

stand the engine on end "flywheel up" remove your puller, heat the threads, then apply wax "cheap candle will do" sometimes this works like a charm. the wax will work into the threads and free them.....

what kind of flywheel puller are you using?? use shorter bolts to bolt it to the flywheel. that way you have more threads on the part that tightens the puller.

you really shouldnt need heat. just a 5 lb sledge and use the puller correctly.
