rebuilding trim motor

Hi everyone. I'm in the process of trying to get my trim motor to work. I took the motor out and got it to turn freely but some of the brushes are toast. Either worn away completely or pretty close to gone. Does anyone know where to get brushes for these motors? Or have any ideas that will work. I WANT TO GET THIS WORKING. Please don't tell me to "set it and forget it" as this is NOT what I am trying to do. Thanks in advanced!!

Re: rebuilding trim motor

Hi. I took it out at the end of the last season. The only hard part was getting the cable disconnected from the trim box. I don't remember exactly how it came apart, all I remember is twisting, turning, and stretching to get it out. I was pretty sore after!
As far as rebuilding goes I think I'm going to try a different motor. I have a power window motor that's just laying around. So far it looks like it'll work. The only thing is the top of the trim box itself might have to be cut a little as this motor is slightly longer. Then I'll just fill the gap with some silicone to seal it off. Either that or maybe some Great Stuff foam. Has anybody else tried this? Is there a motor that fits better? I'm assuming I'll have to bypass something since the original motor has 4 wires coming out of it and this one only has 2. Does anybody know what the extra wires are for?

Re: rebuilding trim motor

I got into on of these this year with a 750ZXi, after about an hour, I realized that I was absolutely wasting my time, so I came on here and found someone that was parting one out, paid $45 for the complete assembly shipped to me and within an hour of having the part in my hand it was functional again. The bad part is that these are designed really poorly as far as being sealed and they will fail again. I took extra care and effort to seal it up so only time will tell.

Re: rebuilding trim motor

My SS trim had failed when I got it. I got it working again and filled everything with grease to keep the water out. It has worked great so far.

Re: rebuilding trim motor

They primarily fail for two reasons.

Most of the time the rubber boot at the back of the ski on the trim cable is torn or missing. It is a $3.00 part and Kawa still sells them.

Or, you sink the ski and the water goes into the box through the cable grommets.

Very poor design and location!
