Re: SJ pump shoe in a fx-1

Ok, I have a SJ aluminum pump shoe on the way. I will use this thread to post pics of the swap. I can't wait to get this pump in and my ski back together.

Re: SJ pump shoe in a fx-1

Better pack a lunch.

I put an aluminum JD shoe in my fx1 along with my bb 144 pump. Many hours in grinding the shoe and the hull. None of them were fun. Tricky to keep the shoe square so it lines up with the pump seal. Mine wound up tight on the bottom but about a 2mm gap on top. Rather than reinstalling the shoe, or loading it up with silicon, I made a plexiglas shim instead. As for the intake grate, I just drilled and tapped a single hole in the JD shoe and used the R&D pro series grate I already had.

I had my JD shoe machined to match the angles. I also ground through the glass in several areas trying to get it to fit. Not a big deal in my case since I had the tray/foam out to refoam and could add extra glass from the top where I knew I needed to.

I think next time I'll just glass in a whole SJ pump cavity and tunnel.

Re: SJ pump shoe in a fx-1

I cut the shoe to match the angles on mine as well, and went through the hull in a few spots too. I'll be glassing from the top now, eventually...

is this because in a FX-1 the pump is mounted at more of an angle than in a SJ?

Re: SJ pump shoe in a fx-1

No, the angles on the pump shoe "wedges" are different on the fx1 versus the SJ. The fx1 shoe is steeper, so you can cut the solid cast aluminum type shoes to match the fx1 angles.

The other fun part is getting the ride plate to fit ...
