Removing Gel That Purple Gel Coat

I want to remove all the Purple from the hull of my ski this winter. I would like to re-coat in white, and paint the entire ski, leaving just the bottom white.

Anyone have any experience doing this?

Will a fresh layer be as strong as the original? I'm not sure if heat was a factor when applying it at the factory.

Any potential problems other than being a headache?

Thanks!

Im not sure I follow...You do realize you can paint over the purple gel coat right?

Or when you said "paint" the second time, were you meaning that you want to re "gelcoat" the ski in white? Gelcoat and Paint are two completely different things...need different guns to spray as well.

Just checking

Re: Removing Gel That Purple Gel Coat

Sorry,

What I want to do is remove all the purple gel coat and re coat in white. I don't want to apply another color over purple. When it wears through, the ski will look like garbage. I don't want to paint over the bottom in white, only to have purple spots showing through. So my goal is to remove all the purple, and redo the bottom in white gel coat not paint.

The paint job will only come down the sides, and not extend onto the bottom. It will remain white underneath.

I've seen paint come off around the jet inlet, and it will definitely chip away from beaching, and striking sticks or other debris in the water.

White will show every scratch & or mark...I painted the bottom deck of my FX-1 in flat primer gray...IMO it looks nice - you can see the ski in the show off your FX-1 thread in this forum.

Re: Removing Gel That Purple Gel Coat

The reason I want the bottom all gel coat white is so it will wear longer, and no purple will ever show through when it gets nicked.

You are talking about a major PITA and undertaking, but yes it can be done.
