98 gsx blowing fuses/dead short

My son has a 98 gsx that started blowing the 15 amp fuse in the foward fuse holder.after checking all the connectors and fuses i found that when you put a new fuse in it has a dead short, that comes and goes ,i also found that after putting a new fuse in it and not blowing the fuse that when you start it and rev it up it would blow the rear 15 amp fuse.now it is still a dead short.i read that the voltage reg could cause this(.it is in the computer)i read that you can install a external regulator.i was wondering what modle and year to get or is there anyother thing to do.any help would be great i am new to pwc's

thanks captmorgans

Open stator cover and see what you got.

Yep the pick up coil brackets rust off and the pickup hits the flywheel and shorts out. There could also be a piece of metal in there from the starter gear doing the same.

Re: 98 gsx blowing fuses/dead short

One of mine did the same. I opened up the mag housing and vacumed the metal shavings that tend to collect in there. Fixed the problem. There is an ohm meter test in the service manual to check the condition of the stator at the plug harness that goes to the mag housing. It's also common for the starter bendix to wear out and cause larger metal fragments to short the stator.

is this the 947 engine? To open the mag housing you will need to pull exhaust pipe and remove the front engine mounts marking their position and shems on the hull. Then put a block of wood under engine to hold it up enough to allow removal of mag housing cover. Inspect and see what you got in there causing short.

Try it first with the VTS disconnected. Then do a voltage test on the battery to see if it charges correctly. Then if necessary, remove the mag housing cover and take a look see into there.
