1990 SP Rev Limiter & Backfiring; Any connection?

I have a 90 SP 580 yellow. It had/has a no spark condition and I diagnosed it as a bad rev limiter with the following test: I would disconnect the brown rev limiter wire from the starter solenoid, and the ski would run fine.

I ordered two used rev limiters off eBay, presumably from running 89 SPs. When I hook these "new" limiters up, the ski runs, but it will not rev out fully, it seems to cut out around a guesstimated 3500-4000 rpm. Also, I get a really nasty backfire approximately every 20-30 seconds of running. I get approximately the same behavior from both of the eBay rev limiters. If I disconnect these "new" limiters, the ski runs fine.

Did I just happen to get two bad rev limiters, or is there something else I should be trying or something else I can test?

Thanks in advance.
