Help with Noise

Ok, so I just finished rebuilding my 95 Wave Raider. I replaced my cylinders with a 61X cylinder and used everything else from the Raider 62T.

It cranks up fine and I can flush it fine. Water comes out of the piser and the exhaust does not feel extremely hot.

Now I can hear somewhat of a noise and im not sure if its coming from the flywheel or cylinders. The noise is kind of hard to describe but it sounds like a metal hitting against metal..

If you hit the throttle it goes away but comes back at idle. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this before and if this should be of concern?

As I indicated, I flushed it for about 15 minutes last night, but do get the noise and only when its in idle ...

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like the standard impeller chattering...

The cylinder and the pistons came together and had a fresh hone and the pistons were matched with the cylinders. I bought them from another user on the forum. Also had new rings and clips.

I just checked the compression and the forward (Flywheel side) reads 152 and the back one is reading 146.

Now back to the noise issue, I have determined that it seems to be coming from the flywheel / Flywheel cover area because when i put my hand on the cover and apply pressure, the noise goes away.

Could the flywheel bolt and or bendix be loose?

I don't see how putting pressure on the cover would stop the noise if it was the flywheel or bendix.

Are you positive it's not coming from the impeller?

Im pretty sure its not coming from the impeller. Prior to disasembly, I did not have the noise and now I do. The impeller has not been touched. Im thinking maybe the spring that goes on the tip of the bendix into the flywhell cover is the problem.

Im removing the flywheel cover tomorrow to check that out.

How much pressure are we talking about?

Was the entire motor removed and replaced, or just the top end?

How's the motor alignment? What about the midshaft bearings? What condition are the motor mounts in?

UPDATE:

I was able to determine where the noise was coming from. As I suspected, I removed the flywheel cover and the spring I was missing a spring and two washers that go into the flywhell indentation where the bendix fits into. The bendix did not look like it was sitting right so I pushed it in until it sat snug and closed everything back up and no noise.

Now for my original issue, I have a slight water leak coming from where the exhaust mani bolts unto the cylinders. I have tried changing gaskets and applied just a little permatex but still have a leak.

The cylinder im using is for a 61X superjet and my exhaust mani is for a 62t so I tried using both the 62T and 61X gaskets and the leak is worse when i use the 61X gasket. When using the 62T gasket it seals much better.

Also, can anyone tell me how I can check if the bilge pump is working? How quickly should water pump out. The ski is 15 years old so should I change it? I think it may not be working. Is there a way to check to see if it works?

Aside from this issue with the water leak, the ski is running awesome in the lake.

Re: Help with Noise

Did you replace the spring and washer, or just push the bendix back and bolt the cover back on?

How are you keeping that 62t mani centered on the 61x cylinder? That 62t mani has 10mm bolt holes, and your 61x cylinder uses 8mm bolts. You can just kinda hold it in place and tighten it and hope. You might get away with short pieces of metal tubing as sleeves to keep it centered.

There is no bilge "pump" on your yami. There is a siphon bilge that uses a vacuum created by the pump. It only works when the jet pump is in the water and pumping. So, when on the trailer, it won't suck out any water. If it's not sucking out water while riding, you need to check the condition of the hoses, check for blockages, etc...
