What if?

What if someone had put in 2 stroke oil in a 4tec motor? What would that do and how bad would it be to get out and put the correct oil in?

Re: What if?

Hmmmm, interesting question. Someone you know?

I'm no expert but here's my opinion. The concern here is the 4- stoke oil is made to a different shear stability and viscosity than a 2 stroke oil. I'm not sure how close a quality 2 stoke oil comes to the demands of an 4 stroke engine, but another variable is it is also designed to burn. (might have left deposits on parts that got really hot while running) If the engine is still running fine and making no strange noises I would drain it and fill it immediately with the correct 4 stroke oil.(change the oil filter too) Run it on the hose with no load to warm the new oil and circulate it thru the engine, then drain it and put fresh oil in. Then go take it for a ride... keep it light duty for a bit to make sure you displaced all the 2 stroke oil from all the bearings before putting a load on it. Then i would probably change it a 3rd time when I got back from the ride. (I tend to take extreme measures sometimes) Some might suggest running a sludge removing additive the first oil change but I have never felt too comfortable running that stuff in my engines. I am curious as to what the experts have to say.

Re: What if?

I ask because I almost poured in the container that a local seadoo dealership (garganos) had sold me on Saturday. I gave the container one last look and realized it was 2 stroke oil!!! So now I have to go back and get the correct oil. Is it a problem that the ski is empty of oil until Saturday?

Re: What if?

Get it outta there! Two stoke oil is meant to burn. Four stroke oil is meant to lube ONLY. I'm confident there will be a viscosity issue and you'll score your pistons and jugs if it doesn't sieze it first. It just isn't worth the risk and why do you think they make two and four stroke oil anyway and not just one oil to cover both?

My bud had an oil change done by the dealer. The dealer left the trash empty oil jug in his storage compartment and it was labeled two stroke oil. He called the shop and they told him to get back pronto for the oil change to four stroke.

Re: What if?

When people rebuild the older 4 stroke aircraft engines they run straight mineral oil for the first 25 - 50 hours to break it in then they switch to a normal oil. If your 2 stroke oil is not synthetic then it's probably mineral oil. It will not hurt anything that I know of. At the first oil change we drain what we can and then put normal oil back in.
